2024 has already seen some excellent “Game of the Year” (GOTY) contenders, including Black Myth Wukong and Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth.
The Game Awards is a highly prestigious event that is held every year to honor the best games in recent times. The “Game of the Year” (GOTY) award is highly sought-after since it declares the best game to have released that year. In 2024, the Game Awards will take place on Thursday, December 12.

2) Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth
Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, developed and published by Square Enix, has everything that is needed to be a GOTY. With a Metascore of 92, the game has a high chance of winning the prestigious title this year. It already received the “Most Anticipated Game of 2024” award last year. The visuals of the game are breathtaking, and players have shown appreciation for the amazing combat system.
3) Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth
Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth is the direct sequel to Yakuza: Like a Dragon. The ninth installment in the series, it was developed by Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio and published by the Japanese company Sega. It currently holds a Metascore of 89.
The game received high ratings and positive acclaim upon release. Notably, the Like a Dragon franchise has grown in popularity in recent years.
4) Helldivers 2
Helldivers 2 was developed by Arrowhead Game Studios and published by Sony Interactive Entertainment. It became a sensational hit in the first half of 2024 and received positive reviews from critics. With a Metascore of 82, it is definitely a GOTY contender. The game sold more than 12 million copies within 2 weeks and holds the record of PlayStation’s fastest-selling title of all time.
5) Animal Well
Finally, our list ends with the indie game Animal Well. Developed by Shared Memory and published by Bigmode, an indie video game publishing company owned by YouTuber Jason Gastrow, it garnered praise for its pleasing visuals and intricate puzzle-solving adventure. With a Metascore of 91, Animal Well may just turn out to be the dark horse this year.
