Comic book inspired movies have been crowding the box office ever since the 2000s. These larger-than-life heroes inspire everyone to be their best selves. Let me ask you a question, what’s better than a comic book inspired movie? A comic book inspired video game.

As a kid who grew up on DC films such as the Dark Knight trilogy and Zack Snyder’s Justice League, these DC games were a dream come true. Ever dreamt of ridding the streets of Gotham from crime as Batman or having an epic showdown between the Flash and Superman? These games truly deliver on that promise.

The aspects of interaction, immersion and fun makes the medium of video games much better than a movie. These games expand upon the comic book mythos and provide fans with a completely original experience that can’t be had elsewhere. In this list, we’re taking a look at 5 DC games every superhero fan must play to dive deep into DC comics lore.

1. Injustice: Gods Among Us

Injustice: Gods Among Us is the first installment in the fighting game series. The game was developed by NetherRealm Studios and published by Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment in 2013 for seventh gen consoles, last gen consoles and PC. The plot is set in an alternate DC universe where the Joker kills Lois Lane leading Superman to lose his sanity.

Due to his grief, Superman establishes a dictatorship rule on Earth, as Batman and other DC heroes fight back against him to restore order. The gameplay involves fighting different DC heroes in 1v1 format and occasional QTEs. This gameplay format is inspired by Mortal Kombat and other fighting games and serves as a great way to move the story forward. The fighting game also had a mobile version by the same studio which featured easier combat controls and simpler graphics than its console counterparts.

2. Injustice 2

Injustice 2 is a direct sequel to Gods Among Us and the second installment in the titular fighting game series. This sequel was also developed by NetherRealm Studios and published by Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment for last-gen consoles and PC. The plot is directly set after the events of the first game.

The story involves Batman and other heroes trying to piece the world back together after the end of Superman’s totalitarian rule. During their attempts to restore peace, a new threat appears, forcing Batman to work with Superman. The gameplay is similar to the first game’s 1v1 fighting format and features improved graphics. NetherRealm Studios also made a mobile version of the game featuring touch controls and simpler graphics like the first game’s mobile port.

3. Batman: Arkham Asylum

Rocksteady Studios developed, and Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment, in collaboration with Eidos Interactive, published Batman: Arkham Asylum, a stealth action game. Veteran comics writer Paul Dini wrote the story, which was inspired by DC Comics featuring the titular asylum. The storyline involves the Joker breaking his custody in Arkham Asylum and trapping Batman with his well-known foes like Scarecrow, Killer Croc, and more.

Players have to stop the asylum’s crazed inmates from creating chaos and put an end to Joker’s evil schemes. Players can stealthily take out enemies or punch their way through fights, making the gameplay varied. The developers released the game for seventh-gen consoles, last-gen consoles, and PC.

4. Batman: Arkham City

Batman: Arkham City is the second game in the popular Batman: Arkham series. Rocksteady Studios developed the game, and Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment published it. Veteran Batman writer Paul Dini returned to write the story for the sequel. The game’s story starts out when Hugo Strange captures Bruce Wayne and throws him in Arkham City, a super prison in Gotham.

Players have to escape and change into Batman to stop Hugo Strange from destroying Gotham City. The gameplay is similar to the first game, involving stealth encounters and hand-to-hand combat. The open world is much bigger than the first game and features enhanced graphics. The developers released the game for seventh-gen consoles, last-gen consoles, and PC.

5. Batman: Arkham Knight

Batman: Arkham Knight is the fourth installment in the Batman: Arkham series. The game is a direct sequel to Batman: Arkham City. Rocksteady Studios developed, and Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment published, the final Batman Arkham game. The game’s story was co-written by Sefton Hill, Ian Ball, and Martin Lancester.

The plot involves Scarecrow launching an outbreak on Gotham, forcing an evacuation and uniting Batman’s rogues like Penguin, Two Face, Harley Quinn, Deathstroke, and the mysterious Arkham Knight to end Batman. The gameplay is similar to the first two games with stealth encounters and melee combat to fight Gotham’s criminals.

The final chapter of the Arkham saga also features the Batmobile to assist Batman in combat and puzzle-solving sections. The developers released the game for last-gen consoles and PC. Batman: Arkham Knight is also available on cloud gaming services like Nvidia Geforce Now and Xbox Cloud Gaming, making it more accessible.

These are the five best DC games that fans can beat to learn more about the beloved comic book multiverse. Aside from these video games, DC fans are in for a treat in 2025, as James Gunn will kick off the DCU with David Corenswet’s Superman this year and a Supergirl movie sometime in the near future.
