The Demon Slayer series, as the name suggests, introduced fans to a horde of demons. Some of them received less screen time than the swing did in the Naruto series. On the other hand, we had demons who posed a threat to the very existence of the human race. The demon hunters who went up against these demons dropped like flies.

Their strength was far beyond one’s imagination, and a lot of it has to do with their Blood Demon Art abilities. This grants demons supernatural abilities that quite literally defy logic. Naturally, this is a hot topic of discussion, especially on forums. The anime and manga community loves debating who the strongest demons are.

However, our lives are made easier thanks to the power-based hierarchy that’s in place. The 12 Kizuki is a title given to some of the strongest demons. These entities have some of the highest concentrations of Muzan’s blood. Let’s take a look at the 5 most powerful demons based on their physical abilities, feats, and Blood Demon Art techniques.

5) Akaza

Akaza is the Upper Moon 3 demon in the anime and manga series. This combat-hungry demon was first introduced in the Mugen Train arc. Kyojuro Rengoku was forced to take him on to save his comrades and all the passengers on the train. Akaza displayed his thirst for power and his love for martial arts. He insisted that Rengoku become a demon, purely to satiate his own curiosity. He wanted to see just how powerful a demon Rengoku would have been. Akaza killed roughly 67 people when he was a human. His speed and power surpass most demons, except for the likes of Muzan, Kokushibo, and Doma.

Akaza is extremely skilled in hand-to-hand combat. He killed the Flame Hashira with little to no effort. All his Blood Demon Art abilities translate to enhanced martial arts techniques. This works just fine against the inferior beings they are pitted against. However, his luck ran out when he had to fight the Sun Breathing user and the Water Hashira. His death is partially due to Akaza’s willingness to join his wife.

He put the fear of God in Giyu and Tanjiro after miraculously sprouting a head despite the decapitation. That being said, he realized that his pursuit of power no longer held any meaning. Accepting his fate, he renounced his will to fight and joined his wife in the afterlife. Akaza was strong enough to kill a Hashira in the series. He is also one of the only demons to grow his head back after having it decapitated. He could have taken out Tanjiro and Giyu if he hadn’t recalled his past.

4) Doma

Doma is the Upper Moon 2 demon, who made a brief appearance in the anime series. He was the one who turned Daki and Gyutaro into demons. Doma also killed Inosuke’s mother and Shinobu’s elder sister, who was a Hashira at that time. This demon has so many issues that one will have an easier time counting the stars at night. That being said, he is one of the most capable combatants on the battlefield.

His Blood Demon Art grants him the ability to manipulate ice, which he can generate from his flesh and blood. He can create extremely fine particles of ice that can be inhaled. The ice crystals made from his flesh are extremely lethal, and they can kill humans instantly. There are plenty of variations of this technique. He can create ice clones and other large structures that can launch a variety of ice-based attacks. He took on Kanao Tsuyuri, Shinobu Kocho, and Inosuke Hashibira.

Shinobu was informed about this demon’s problematic tendencies, particularly his love for consuming the flesh of women. She knew that he liked to consume women and banked on this tendency for the win. She was ingesting wisteria poison in small dosages until her entire body was circulating it. At the time of consumption, Shinobu had 37 kilograms of poison circulating in her blood. Shinobu’s sacrifice was necessary for Doma’s death. If he hadn’t consumed Shinobu, he would have defeated all three of them with ease.

3) Kokushibo

Kokushibo is the Upper Moon 1 demon. He was Yoriichi’s elder brother who turned into a demon. His brother was always a step ahead in terms of combat. You can imagine how it must feel for an elder sibling to constantly live in his younger brother’s shadow. This drove him to the deep end. His suffering didn’t end there because he was outclassed by his own brother despite turning into a demon. The fact that an 80-year-old Yoriichi nearly defeated Kokushibo added salt to his gaping wound. Kokushibo is also one of the only Upper Moon demons who have a breathing technique.

He utilizes a weapon made from his own flesh that can shoot crescent-like shards. He was so strong that it required the combined efforts of Genya Shinazugawa, Gyomei Himejima, Sanemi Shinazugawa, and Muichiro Tokito. Among the names mentioned, one of them is the most talented Hashira and another is the strongest Hashira. Muichiro and Genya succumbed to their injuries.

Both Gyomei and Sanemi unlocked their Demon Slayer Marks, which goes to show just how strong Kokushibo was. His regeneration was incredibly quick, and he commanded the battlefield with a well-rounded mixture of long- and short-range attacks. Kokushibo was the strongest Upper Moon demon in the series.

2) Kibutsuji Muzan

Kibutsuji Muzan is the most powerful demon on this list if you only account for the demon’s feats. He was the first-ever demon to come into existence. His avarice knew no bounds, and it ultimately led to his death. Muzan has the unique ability to control every other demon in the series. The Demon King’s physical abilities surpass every character in this series, except for Yoriichi. In fact, he nearly managed to take down the entire Demon Slayer Corps. Giyu Tomioka and Sanemi Shinazugawa were the only Hashira remaining.

He has 7 hearts and 5 brains, making it incredibly hard for the demon hunters to land a fatal blow. The only way they could defeat him was by fighting him till the sun rose. Muzan can contort and manipulate his body through his Blood Demon Art. The presence of multiple vital organs is a byproduct of this. The Demon King can regenerate completely in a matter of seconds. Tamayo’s medicines and Tanjiro’s Breath of the Sun, paired with the Red Nichirin Blade, slowed down his regeneration. Decapitating his head was nearly impossible. It took the combined efforts of all the Hashira, the demon hunters, and the Kakushi to defeat him.

1) Demon Tanjiro

You might think Muzan would be the epitome of demonic strength, but that’s shockingly not the case. The protagonist of the series turned into a demon at the end of the manga. The lack of feats and his position on this list might raise a few eyebrows. However, a few things make him a cut above the rest. Tanjiro was a demon who conquered the sun. His body also accepted the entirety of Muzan’s blood, making him just as strong as the Demon King himself. The Sun Breathing technique propels Tanjiro to the next level. This is because the Sun Breathing Technique was designed specifically to kill the Demon King.

If Kanao Tsuyuri hadn’t intervened, Demon Tanjiro would have been unstoppable. The fact that he conquered the sun would make Nichirin Blades useless. It would take extremely high doses of wisteria poison to kill him. However, Kanao Tsuyuri used the last vial of medicine she had to turn Tanjiro back into a human. Demon Tanjiro didn’t have enough time to get accustomed to his new form. Otherwise, Demon Tanjiro would have become the strongest demon in the Demon Slayer series.

Conclusion

As an avid fan, you might scratch your head after attempting to dissect the series and understand the identity of the strongest demon. Kibutsuji Muzan takes the belt if we look at feats alone. However, it’s hard to ignore the things that Demon Tanjiro achieved in such a short span of time. Additionally, he had a ton of potential that wasn’t realized. Therefore, most fans will agree with the fact that Demon Tanjiro is the strongest demon in Demon Slayer.
