The Naruto series is considered one of the most successful and popular titles in this medium. In fact, it’s so popular that people who don’t even consume anime and manga know about the show. From the Rasengan to the popular catchphrase “Dattebayo,” this title has become a part of mainstream media. For many of you, this show would have served as a gateway to this wonderful medium of storytelling.

Those who have watched the show absolutely love the villains. You might love the likes of Madara and Obito for their edgy one-liners that they drop from time to time. But, the villains are objectively well-written and fleshed out in the anime. They have compelling backstories and an array of techniques that are not only powerful but also visually appealing.

Owing to the popularity of the show, going through discussions regarding the rankings of villains can be migraine-inducing. However, this list will give you some clarity on who the strongest villains are in the series. It is also important to note that Itachi Uchiha is not on this list because he isn’t particularly an antagonist. Additionally, all the villains mentioned in this list are from the original series and Shippuden. With that said, here are the 5 strongest villains in the Naruto series.

5) Kabuto

Kabuto as a character surprised the entire fanbase with his power. He followed Orochimaru, and you could consider him his disciple. One of the most impressive things he has done in the series is that he achieved Sage Mode. Kabuto quite literally perfected certain techniques that his own mentor couldn’t do. One of his greatest strengths is his versatility. He has a plethora of jutsus that allow him to fight some of the toughest characters.

Kabuto in Sage Mode also had immunity from genjutsu. If you’re a Uchiha, fighting him would be nothing short of a nightmare. Kabuto took on Sasuke and reanimated Itachi Uchiha. There aren’t many characters who would be able to take these Uchiha brothers on and live to tell the tale. He was so strong that he managed to defeat Sasuke, who had a Mangekyou Sharingan at the time. The only reason he survived was due to the Izanami cast by Itachi.

Kabuto was forced to release the reanimation, and he was released from the Izanami after satisfying the necessary conditions. He had a moment of self-reflection and realized that Itachi showed him his path. This was the only reason why Kabuto saved Sasuke despite delivering a deadly blow to the Uchiha prodigy.

4) Pain/Nagato

Pain is one of the most powerful villains in this series. He quite literally destroyed an entire village with a singular sphere of repulsive force. Imagine seeing a figure float up in the sky and reducing a village to a crater. Such is his destructive ability. Pain nearly defeated Naruto, who had achieved Sage Mode at that time. He also defeated Jiraiya, who was an incredibly powerful shinobi at the time.

Nagato also had access to the Rinnegan, which is the most powerful eye that one could have in the Naruto series. He also had access to the Six Paths Technique. He made this technique his own by inserting Black Receiver Rods into corpses with the help of the Outer Path. This technique was called the Six Paths of Pain. He was able to control these corpses like they were his own clones.

Each body was limited to one branch of the Six Paths Technique. As a reader, you can imagine what a nightmare it would be to take on six clones, all of which have Rinnegan abilities. While Naruto’s Talk no Jutsu played a role, it was the protagonist’s actions and choice to not kill that changed his heart. One can say that Nagato turned over a new leaf and helped restore Konohagakure.

3) Obito Uchiha

Obito Uchiha is by far one of the strongest villains in Naruto. One little misunderstanding led to a child harboring hatred for years on end, eventually waging war on all of humanity. This was all because he assumed that his best friend killed the girl he once liked. What he didn’t realize at the time was that Madara deceived him. Obito Uchiha became the Ten-Tailed Beast Jinchuriki in the anime series. One of his most powerful techniques was Kamui—a space-time ninjutsu that allows him to teleport things/people to another dimension. He also had the Mangekyou Sharingan.

His power levels exceeded Hashirama Senju, and he nearly destroyed the entire Allied Shinobi Forces. The masked madman had techniques like Tailed Beast Bomb in his arsenal. Obito also took Nagato’s Rinnegan and put that in his left eye socket. In his Jinchuriki form, he could negate any and all ninjutsu thanks to the Truth-Seeking Balls. These are made of all five nature transformations and have the ability to completely nullify ninjutsu techniques. It is noteworthy to mention that Obito only used the Outer Path in the Six Paths Techniques. Being able to harness the Ten-Tailed Beast’s energy is no joke, and shinobis dropped like flies when they went up against him.

2) Madara Uchiha

Madara is a Uchiha prodigy who had the Eternal Mangekyou Sharingan and also became the Ten-Tailed Beast Jinchuriki. His Rinnegan was far better because he unlocked it by infusing Hashirama cells inside him. This resulted in the mixture of Indra and Ashura’s chakra, which created the Rinnegan. He was able to use all of the Six Paths Techniques. He also developed the Rinnesharingan when he became the Ten-Tailed Beast Jinchuriki. His defensive abilities were sublime because he had access to a full-body Susanoo. This is considered to be the pinnacle of Sharingan techniques.

This power-hungry codger used a technique that quite literally put every single person on the planet in a genjutsu. He believed that hypnotizing every single being on the planet was the only way to achieve world peace. Little did he know that he was given a taste of his own medicine because he too was a pawn for a grander scheme that was in place.

1) Kaguya Otsutsuki

Kaguya Otsutsuki is undeniably the strongest villain on this list. She is a literal goddess among mortal men. Being an Otsutsuki, she mastered all forms of ninjutsu. She was able to create the Expansive Truth-Seeking Orb, which would continue to expand until the previous dimension was overwritten. It is nearly impossible to stop this.

She also had the Rinnesharingan and had access to the powers of the Ten-Tailed Beast. Kaguya Otsutsuki can also absorb chakra from people who were stuck in the Infinite Tsukuyomi. She is nearly indestructible, and the protagonist needs plot armor to defeat Kaguya Otsutsuki. Naruto resorted to a cheap tactic by making erotic male clones to distract her mid-fight, buying just enough time for Sasuke, Sakura, and Naruto to seal her.

Conclusion

Kaguya Otsutsuki’s defeat has left fans scratching their heads for years now. It’s safe to say that her defeat was not Kishimoto’s best work and that he was capable of coming up with a better ending. With all that said, it’s easy to determine the strongest villain because Kaguya Otsutsuki hails from a clan that devours the planet. Sealing her was one of the biggest achievements that the human race can be proud of.
