Parental figures in anime play a huge role in the lives of characters. Through the values and teachings they impart, their children can be heavily influenced in their future actions. We have seen many admirable father figures in anime, such as Minato Namikaze and Loid Forger. On the contrary, there are also multiple who have had the opposite effect.
Though not necessarily having blood ties, these paternal authorities have incurred the wrath of their fandom. Here are the 8 most hated fathers in all of anime.

8) Ging Freecss – Hunter x Hunter
The father of Gon, Ging, is a unique addition to this list. This is mainly because he himself would admit that he is not fit to be a father. As a Hunter seeking out the curiosities of life, he has been absent for most of his son’s life.
While he did motivate Gon to chase after him, Ging has never once made it easy for his son. He seems to show trust in Gon’s skills but has not openly cared even when the protagonist nearly died during the Chimera Ant Arc. This has admittedly not had much of an impact on Gon, who was never dependent on Ging. Nevertheless, it is still extremely frustrating to watch Ging’s nonchalance towards a son who faced multiple trials just to meet him.
Due to this, everyone was extremely satisfied when Leorio finally punched Ging during the Hunter Chairman Election.
7) Gambino – Berserk
Gambino was not the real father of Guts but provided the boy with shelter and food when he was at his lowest. By taking him into his group and even occasionally training him with the sword, fans were beginning to warm up to him.
However, he quickly proved this perception wrong by showing another side of his personality. He was very short-tempered and abused Guts frequently. After losing his leg, his tantrums only increased. Things were finally taken too far when Gambino sold Guts to Donovan for three silver coins.
This permanently scarred the boy and made his father an irredeemable person. Even after his death, Gambino continues to haunt Guts’ memory.
6) Grisha Yeager – Attack on Titan
Grisha is a deeply complex and morally ambiguous character in Attack on Titan. On one hand, he was a good father to Eren and was manipulated into committing atrocities. At the same time, his treatment of Zeke was also far from that of an ideal father.
It is clear that Grisha genuinely loved Zeke and wished to look after him in Marley. However, his intense feelings for the Eldian Restorationists drastically changed him. With the strain of betraying the government, Grisha placed a huge amount of burden on his son. This pressure eventually became mistreatment, and Zeke ended up reporting his parents.
Grisha’s actions were formed out of the twisted world he was born into, making his situation not as black-and-white as others on this list. Despite this, he was still extremely exploitative and irresponsible with his son.
5) Dario Brando – JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure
A major portion of JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure focuses on the Joestar bloodline’s battles against Dio or followers of Dio. The reason Dio turned into such an evil and ruthless person can be mainly attributed to his father – Dario Brando.
Dario was immoral, greedy, and abusive. His alcoholic tendencies caused him to beat Dio and his mother, eventually leading to the death of the latter. His lack of remorse and responsibility sowed the seeds of hatred inside Dio. While Dario’s screen time was less, the impact he had on his son’s dangerous ambition is felt throughout the series.
4) Vinsmoke Judge – One Piece
Vinsmoke Judge is the king of the Germa Kingdom and Sanji’s father in One Piece. He is an aggressive and calculating person who treats others as tools for his ambitions. For the sake of increasing the powers of his kingdom, Judge provided genetic modifications to all his children.
Among them, Sanji was the only one whose strength didn’t increase. Due to this, he saw him as a “waste of space” and locked him in a dungeon for over six months. Judge never showed any kindness to Sanji and stripped all his subjects of their emotions.
Later, for the sake of the alliance with Big Mom, he threatened Sanji to marry the Yonko’s daughter. If he were to refuse, Judge would attack Zeff – Sanji’s caring adoptive father.
3) Charles zi Britannia – Code Geass
Charles is the epitome of manipulation and tyranny as the emperor of the Britannian Empire in Code Geass. He saw his children as nothing but pawns in his goal to create a world of power. Believing in the survival of the fittest, Charles never cared about Lelouch and Nunnally. Soon after the death of their mother, he cut ties with them and sent them off as hostages to Japan.
For his goal of the Ragnarok Connection, where he would unite all beings, Charles was willing to sacrifice as many innocents as it took. His oppressive nature stemmed from a traumatic childhood but doesn’t excuse his actions towards his children.
2) Gendo Ikari – Neon Genesis Evangelion
As one of the iconic “bad dads” in anime, Gendo Ikari is the perfect example of what not to do as a father. Realising the role he played in Shinji’s life, Gendo took full advantage of this. Having to face the Angels with his Evangelion robots, he was willing to use and dispose of whoever he wanted.
Resultingly, Shinji’s craving for love is also constantly abused. By continuously straining his son’s psyche, Gendo kept throwing him into the frontlines of battle. Neon Genesis Evangelion reveals that most of his actions are driven by his obsession to reunite with his dead wife. However, Gendo’s emotional distance and selfishness overshadow any other striking complexities of his character.
1) Shou Tucker – Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood
Shou Tucker is undoubtedly the most hated anime father, and for good reason. During his introduction, Tucker seemed to be a kind and approachable man who shared a good relationship with his daughter.
In a shocking reveal, it is shown that he is a deranged and apathetic man who cares about nothing but his research. To prove himself in Alchemy, he was willing to experiment on his daughter and dog to create a Chimera. This lack of parental love and morality contributes to one of the most heartbreaking moments in anime.
Even when confronted by the protagonist, Tucker showed no remorse. He did not truly love his daughter and only saw her as a means to achieve his ambitions. This understandably causes outrage even to this day, making him an infamous figure in anime.
