As one of the most popular anime and manga of all time, Jujutsu Kaisen is an exciting and complex tale surrounding curses and sorcerers. The story features a vast array of characters with unique motivations and fascinating powers.

Unfortunately, while some of these figures shine in the spotlight, others are overshadowed. As a consequence of being an extremely ambitious series, it fails to deliver on all fronts by the conclusion. Hence, here are the 8 most wasted characters in Jujutsu Kaisen.

8) Kinji Hakari

Hyped up to be a sorcerer who could reach the level of Gojo, Hakari was one of the most fascinating individuals in Jujutsu Kaisen. Ever since his introduction in the Perfect Preparation Arc, he impressed fans through his brash and excitable demeanor.

This was further boosted by his extremely distinctive Domain Expansion, Idle Death Gamble. By turning any confrontation into a pachinko parlor, fans got to experience Hakari manipulating probability while getting absorbed into his layered powers.

As a result, Hakari was able to face the likes of Kashimo during the Culling Game. Unfortunately, right when we believed his role in the series to be starting, it ended. Despite being one of the strongest sorcerers, he was never featured in the final battle against Sukuna.

Rather, Gege decided to conclude his character arc through an off-screen battle against Uraume. This disappointed fans who were hopeful to learn more about him.

7) Hajime Kashimo

Much like Hakari, his rival Kashimo was also extremely underutilized in Jujutsu Kaisen. As a reincarnated sorcerer who was a figure of dominance in history, Kashimo’s wish was to face powerful opponents and eventually fight Sukuna.

After entering the Culling Game, he had an intense fight against Hakari, which most fans consider to be among the best in the series. Having stunned readers with his electric powers, Kashimo joined the main characters’ efforts to fight Sukuna.

The God of Lightning got his desire after Gojo’s defeat, as he jumped into battle to face the King of Curses. Despite damaging Sukuna and forcing him to fully incarnate, Kashimo couldn’t finish the job. Rather, he was dismantled and killed just like Gojo.

This was an underwhelming ending considering how Kashimo was anticipated to be a being who could push Sukuna to his limits. Additionally, Kashimo’s actual death was never properly displayed, simply transitioning to an afterlife fantasy. This kept his fate ambiguous till the story ended with no mention of him again.

6) Megumi Fushiguro

One of the most wasted characters in Jujutsu Kaisen is surprisingly its own deuteragonist. Megumi Fushiguro, the holder of the Ten Shadows technique, was one of the most beloved figures right from the beginning.

He held a close bond with Itadori and Nobara, as they grew together and faced enemies. However, as the cast kept getting bigger, Megumi was pushed to the sidelines. This began right from the Shibuya Incident Arc, where his only major contribution was his confrontation with his father.

Later, in the Culling Game Arc, Megumi was possessed by Sukuna, and his real self never made a reappearance till the very end of the series. Unlike Itadori, who constantly fought for his body, Megumi had nearly lost his sense of self.

This effectively wrote him out till his last moment of valiance to force Sukuna out of his body. Nevertheless, many fans believed it was too little too late.

5) Yorozu

Yorozu was a character who was connected to most central themes in Jujutsu Kaisen but was regrettably killed off before fans ever made a connection with her. As a renowned person from the Heian Era, Yorozu was deeply in love with Sukuna.

She agreed to Kenjaku’s plan of reincarnating in the Culling Game, going on to possess Tsumiki’s body. Following this, Yorozu showed off her obsession with Sukuna by wishing to kill him in battle and have him to herself.

However, this didn’t happen, as Sukuna—who now possessed Megumi—killed her with Mahoraga. By making Megumi kill his sister in essence, he could control his new body more easily. Hence, Yorozu’s introduction to the series only served this purpose.

Most readers believed she could have been much more significant given her rare historical connection with Sukuna. Her unordinary personality and powers over construction were also unique to the series but were never explored properly.

4) Uraume

Sukuna’s most loyal follower, Uraume, had been by his side thousands of years in the past, having been recruited by the King of Curses to be his subordinate due to their ice powers. They later reunited with their master during the Shibuya incident and stayed by his side ever since.

Due to this, most fans found Uraume’s lack of relevance in the plot odd. Uraume’s only proper battle in Jujutsu Kaisen was their fight against Hakari during the Shinjuku Showdown Arc. As we saw earlier, this was completely covered off-screen.

Once Sukuna died, Uraume decided to kill themself. They were later shown in a bittersweet post-mortem scene where Sukuna decided to walk another path with a child Uraume. Fans never got to know this character as an individual but only through his connection to Sukuna. Even then, he hardly had any screen time, starting and ending his presence as an enigma.

3) Tengen

Tengen was one of the most important characters in Jujutsu Kaisen, whose powers were central to the world’s stability. He was also the main goal of Kenjaku’s plans, as the antagonist wished to merge Tengen with humanity.

While Tengen was over a thousand years old and had a significant role, this was never properly shown in Jujutsu Kaisen. This figure of wisdom was present in the background, while other sorcerers fought for his sake.

Despite coming up with the strategy to face Kenjaku along with Yuki and Choso, Tengen continued remaining passive. When their plan failed, Kenjaku found Tengen’s body and seized him, indicating he had died. However, following the loss of the villains, remnants of Tengen were found and used temporarily as barriers to shield the country.

This ending confused fans as they never truly understood Tengen’s purpose in the series. Despite being opposed by several forces, he himself never personally interfered. Due to this, while we could acknowledge his strength and wisdom, he was far from a memorable individual.

2) Yuki Tsukumo

Yuki, one of the four special-grade sorcerers, had been highly involved in the major events of Jujutsu Kaisen from the beginning. She trained Todo and unwittingly influenced Geto’s descent into villainy. At the same time, her actual presence was limited to brief glimpses.

She finally had her moment to shine when facing Kenjaku alongside Choso. Yuki stunned fans with her mastery and unwavering relentlessness, delivering powerful blows to Kenjaku. However, the villain had his own repertoire of cursed techniques, harming Yuki with his Domain Expansion—Womb Profusion—and piercing her with Uzumaki. In a last bid to defeat him, Yuki created a black hole powerful enough to threaten Kenjaku.

Nevertheless, he survived, while Yuki ultimately fell. This event reminded fans of the fight between Tomura and Star and Stripe in My Hero Academia, where the hero’s only purpose seemed to be showcasing the villain’s strength. While undoubtedly a memorable fight, their confrontation ultimately focused on Kenjaku.

Yuki Tsukumo, with her bold personality, stole the spotlight during her limited screen time, but her conclusion felt rushed and undeserved.

1) Nobara Kugisaki

Perhaps the most tragic case of wasted potential in Jujutsu Kaisen is Nobara Kugisaki. As a member of the main trio, Nobara shared a wholesome bond with Itadori and Megumi. She wore her emotions on her sleeves and took part in several exhilarating fights.

Just when her transition into a powerful sorceress seemed near, however, she appeared to be killed by Mahito. Viewers were shocked and believed it to be untimely but appreciated the impact it had on Itadori’s development.

However, Jujutsu Kaisen pulled a move that has become a shonen stereotype. The series kept Nobara’s survival a secret and suddenly brought her back during the final fight. After the rest of the cast had hard-fought battles, Nobara simply entered to use her Resonance on Sukuna, allowing Itadori to strike his soul and save Megumi.

Most of the fandom agreed that the tritagonist deserved better than this. Rather than actually treating her as a beloved character, the series used her as a plot device to defeat Sukuna. This felt like a disservice to what could have been one of the most impressive female characters ever.
