Anime has a knack for presenting morally ambiguous characters who can be unhinged and get our blood boiling. There are few better ways of expressing this nature of people than the “evil scientist” trope. As seen in the case of Kyudai Garaki from My Hero Academia, geniuses of this nature are completely embroiled in their inventions, paying no heed to ethics.

This leads to insidious results, whether it be the creation of Nomus or the mental manipulation of Tomura Shigaraki. Hence, due to his contribution to All For One’s evil schemes, Kyudai Garaki is a memorable character despite his short stay.

While he is undoubtedly detestable, the persona of his character is extremely fascinating. Due to this, fans may wish to know about more such similar characters. Hence, here are 8 unhinged evil anime scientists just like Kyudai Garaki.

1) Akihiro Kanou – Tokyo Ghoul

There are very few anime characters who face as much tragedy as Kaneki from Tokyo Ghoul. The protagonist of the series can directly attribute all his suffering to the man who made him a ghoul – Akihiro Kanou.

As an unparalleled genius in the series, Kanou’s experiments blurred the lines between humans and monsters. He created several ghouls in the pursuit of his goals, caring little about the lives lost along the way. Kanou was also more than willing to manipulate others to do his bidding, as seen in the cast of Kurona and Nashiro.

Operating in the shadows while taking pride in his foul handiwork, Kanou remained defiant until the very end. His sociopathic disregard for morality makes him one of the most sinister scientists in anime.

2) Mayuri Kurotsuchi – Bleach

Despite technically being a “good guy,” Mayuri Kurotsuchi is one scientist who is often compared to anime villains. This is because his eccentric nature, experiments, and role in Bleach are far from the depiction of nobleness.

Mayuri was the main researcher of the Soul Reapers but showed little care for furthering the interests of Soul Society. Rather than this, he was always on the lookout for his next big invention, willing to use anyone to achieve it.

His sadistic nature was best displayed when he used his own “daughter” Nemuri to achieve victory against Pernida. Fans were also horrified when Mayuri displayed the grotesque Bankai he created and was joyful of its presence. Due to this, this “hero” in Bleach is a very morally dubious character.

3) Shou Tucker – Fullmetal Alchemist

Shou Tucker is in the hall of fame for being the most hated anime dad ever, and for good reason. This seemingly kind person was an alchemist who was desperate to maintain his position. For its sake, he was willing to create a chimera by fusing his own daughter and dog, leaving them in constant suffering.

Things went from bad to worse when Tucker showed no remorse for his actions, seeing it as necessary for scientific advancement. His nonchalance echoes Garaki’s rationalization of his experiments as benefiting All For One’s vision.

Shou Tucker’s story serves as a stark reminder of how unchecked ambition and a lack of empathy can lead to unspeakable atrocities.

4) Orochimaru – Naruto

While Orochimaru has certainly mellowed out in Boruto, he was a terrifying scientist in the prequel, Naruto. Wishing to uncover the mysteries of life, Orochimaru was obsessed with obtaining immortality. For its sake, he had kidnapped and tortured multiple children, seeing joy in the process.

He also used Sasuke’s instability to place the Curse Mark, preparing his body to be the perfect vessel. Orochimaru’s craze with his experiments, even sacrificing his own followers, is similar to Garaki’s. His snake-like demeanor and penchant for betraying allies make him a truly sinister figure.

5) Caesar Clown – One Piece

Caesar Clown is one of One Piece’s most wicked figures, having a hand in unspeakable crimes. Having turned Punk Hazard into his base, he destroyed all life on the island and conducted inhuman experiments on children.

Caesar was also responsible for producing the SMILE fruits, which caused unending suffering to the people of Wano and others around the world. His toxic gas is a weapon of mass destruction, one he never hesitates to use. While the antagonist has become more of a comic relief in One Piece currently, fans will never forgive his earlier evilness in the series.

6) Dr. Genus – One Punch Man

As an antagonist in One Punch Man, Dr. Genus left a deep impression by being the first evil genius we see in the series. Disillusioned with the world, he wished to make society evolve into a higher form. For its sake, Genus began experimenting on humans and animals through the House of Evolution.

Despite having created his mutated subjects, Genus saw them as nothing but experiments. However, after seeing Saitama’s unbelievable powers, he recognized the futility of his actions and gave up. Hence, while Genus has gone through some form of penance compared to the other scientists, his initial nature and willingness to commit evil in the series are heavily reminiscent of Garaki.

7) Gendo Ikari – Neon Genesis Evangelion

Similar to Shou Tucker, Gendo Ikari is yet another hateable anime father who was a genius in his craft. In a world under threat of Angels, Gendo had come up with the ingenious Evangelion project, the only line of defense.

Unfortunately, he was working on an evil scheme in the shadows that would allow him to reunite with his dead wife through an immense amount of tragedy. While Gendo may have been molded by loss, his character only goes from bad to worse through his treatment of Shinji. He cared nothing for his son’s mental well-being and constantly manipulated him to risk his life.

Hence, he and Garaki are characters who prioritize their ambitions over the well-being of others, showing a complete lack of empathy.

8) Nina Einstein – Code Geass

Nina was originally a shy girl who hesitated to express her true thoughts. However, after getting obsessed with Euphemia, she came out of her shell and displayed her intellect. She developed the FLEIJA bomb, a weapon of mass destruction. Nina showed no remorse for the people affected by her work, willing to use it simply to defeat Lelouch.

Her actions only kept getting more and more unhinged as the series proceeded, impacted by Euphemia’s death. She was extremely racist and sacrificed both friends and allies for the sake of her goals. Like Garaki, Nina was driven by a twisted sense of purpose, making her a tragic yet terrifying figure in anime.
