Hinata and Kageyama are the main duo in Haikyuu. Did they ever meet on the same team again after graduating from Karasuno?
If there’s a survey on what is the most iconic sports anime of all time, no one would be surprised if Haikyuu pops up as one of the answers. More than a volleyball anime, Haikyuu is a tale about rivalry, sportsmanship, and brotherhood. The story revolves around Hinata and Kageyama in the Karasuno Volleyball Team.
Although they were at odds in their first few encounters, they made a great duo with their signature combo, the super quick attack. After experiencing professional volleyball, they were scouted by the Japanese National team and became partners once again.
Haikyuu is the perfect love letter for the sport, especially with how Hinata and Kageyama’s story resonates with fans. The iconic duo solidified their place as fan favorites in the series. Their dynamic is a show of synergy and rivalry at the same time. So, how did they end up together?
Hinata and Kageyama’s History in Karasuno
In their pre-high school days, Hinata and Kageyama were already big volleyball fans. Hinata was a member of the Yukigaoka Junior High team, while Kageyama played for Kitagawa Daichi Junior High. When their teams clashed in a tournament, Kageyama came out victorious. He mocked Hinata’s height, though it wasn’t enough to faze Hinata. The two parted ways in a sour mood.
However, they were soon reunited as Karasuno High School students. Hinata and Kageyama hated each other’s guts, even when they played for the same team. So much so, that it heavily affected their teamwork in Karasuno.
The franchise follows Hinata and Kageyama’s story along with the rest of the team members. After countless matches, the Karasuno Volleyball Team made it to the nationals. However, they had to part ways for the second time when they graduated high school.
Hinata and Kageyama’s Volleyball Career after Karasuno
After the events of Haikyuu, the players went on with their lives and pursued their own ventures, of course, with volleyball in mind. Considering how much the duo had improved, it’s not surprising to see them scouted by major teams.
Hinata decided to go abroad for his first few years after graduation, with Brazil as the destination. He was curious about another type of volleyball—beach volleyball. He made his name known in Brazil and earned the nickname Ninja Shoyo.
In contrast to Hinata, Kageyama immediately got his hands full in Japan. After graduating, he joined the Japanese national team for the 2016 Rio Olympics. Around the same time, he was also signed to play for the Japanese Division 1 V-league team, Schweiden Adlers. The team became the reigning champion for three consecutive years.
The two crossed paths again after Hinata’s return to Japan. In 2018, Hinata was quickly scouted by MSBY Black Jackals, a Division 1 team in Japan’s V-league. During his time here, he reunited with Kageyama, but as opponents, since Kageyama was playing for the Adlers.
Three years later, Japan’s National Volleyball Team called upon both of them to face the upcoming 2021 Olympics. Shortly after their reunion, they parted ways yet again to play internationally. Hinata went back to Brazil and played for Asas Sao Paulo, while Kageyama was signed by an Italian team, Ali Roma. The story ended with a callback to its beginning, with Hinata and Kageyama facing each other in an all-star match.
Hinata and Kageyama’s Teams As Professional Volleyball Players
As mentioned before, during their professional careers, Hinata and Kageyama joined a couple of teams both in Japan and internationally. Let’s go over them one by one.
Japanese Teams
The first to join a professional team was Kageyama with Schweiden Adlers. First formed in 1953 as Imachi Electronic Volleyball Club, the club was renamed Schweiden Adlers in 1982.
The Adlers were successful in Japan. They had a record of 11 championships in the V-league and 14 wins in the Kurowashiki tournament. Schweiden Adlers is a reference to a real-life V-league team, Oita Miyoshi Weisse Adler.
Hinata only entered Japanese professional volleyball after training in beach volleyball in Brazil. However, upon his return to Japan, MSBY Black Jackals quickly signed him. Unlike Schweiden Adlers, the Black Jackals had rough beginnings. They officially entered the Japanese league in 1971 and won their first championship a decade later.
Despite their rocky start, MSBY Black Jackals made a comeback and won the 11th and 12th V-league championships consecutively. MSBY Black Jackals is a reference to its real-life counterpart, the Panasonic Panthers.
International Teams
Hinata’s training in Brazil paid off well, significantly improving his skills. This opportunity allowed his name to be recognized in Brazil, leading him to join Asas Sao Paulo. He joined this team shortly after the 2021 Olympics.
Kageyama’s achievements in Japan propelled his career immensely. He participated in the Olympics twice, in 2016 and 2021. Similar to Hinata, he went international after his performance in the 2021 Olympics and joined Ali Roma as a setter.
