Satoru Gojo and Megumi Fushiguro have one of the most interesting dynamics in Jujutsu Kaisen. When the anime started airing, Gojo was introduced as Megumi’s teacher at Tokyo Jujutsu High. As the series progressed, their relationship caught the eyes of many.

It was eventually revealed that Megumi was taken in and trained by Gojo to become a Jujutsu sorcerer at a young age. As such, many fans started asking, “Does Gojo adopt Megumi in Jujutsu Kaisen?” However, Gojo never formally adopted Megumi, given that Gojo himself was underage when he took Megumi in his care at Jujutsu High.

Why Did Gojo Take Care of Megumi in Jujutsu Kaisen?

Jujutsu Kaisen season 2 provided the complete origin of Megumi Fushiguro and Satoru Gojo’s relationship. In the Hidden Inventory arc, Satoru Gojo and Suguru Geto were tasked with protecting the Star Plasma Vessel, Riko Amanai, to ensure her safe merger with Master Tengen. However, Toji Fushiguro, renowned for being the ‘Sorcerer Killer’, managed to end Amanai’s life, while leaving Gojo and Geto gravely injured.

However, right on the verge of dying, Gojo managed to learn how to use Reverse Cursed Technique. It allowed him to completely heal his wounds, and face off against him for a rematch. In their second bout, Gojo was able to effortlessly evade Toji’s attacks and finished him off with a single Hollow Purple attack. Before dying, Toji left Gojo with a few last words. According to Toji, his son Megumi would soon be sold off to the Zen’in Clan. He told Gojo to do whatever he wished with this information, and passed away.

Some time after his climactic battle against Toji, Gojo paid a visit to Megumi. After having a brief discussion with him, Gojo realized his potential and decided to take both Megumi and his sister, Tsumiki Fushiguro, in his care. Gojo successfully saved Megumi from the Zen’in Clan and later acted as his mentor, guardian, and benefactor.

The Influence of the Zen’in Clan on Gojo and Megumi

The Zen’in Clan had a significant role in both Gojo and Megumi’s lives, albeit in different ways. The clan was notorious for its strict hierarchy and emphasis on the purity of their bloodline. This often led to abuse and neglect of members who did not meet their standards, with Maki, Mai, and Toji being a few examples.

Being the head of the Gojo clan, Satoru Gojo was fully aware of the Zen’in Clan’s harsh ways and mistreatment of their own members. His hatred for them stems from their oppressive traditions and disdain for sorcerers who deviated from their ideals. This, along with the corrupt ways of Jujutsu society higher-ups, fueled his desire to break the cycle of exploitation that young sorcerers were often subjected to.

Given that he was aware of their ways, Gojo ensured Megumi that neither he nor his sister would be able to live happily with the Zen’in Clan. Because of this, Megumi decided to go along with Gojo and become a sorcerer at Jujutsu High. Therefore, Megumi was able to grow up with relative independence, thanks to Gojo shielding him from the Zen’in Clan’s clutches.

Although he was born outside of the clan, Megumi’s lineage and Ten Shadows technique remain tied to the notorious clan. The Zen’in Clan may not have had a direct influence on his life. However, he was being sold off to them by Toji since the latter believed at the time, that Megumi’s Ten Shadows Technique would make him a valuable asset to them, and that he could have a better life there than being with Toji.

The Relationship Between Gojo and Megumi in Jujutsu Kaisen

To this day, many fans view Gojo and Megumi’s relationship as resembling that of an adoptive father and his son. However, the narrative made it seem that Megumi only ever thought of Gojo as his benefactor and teacher.

Gojo on the other hand, acted as more than just a teacher to Megumi. He was a mentor, guardian, and an occasional troublemaker in Megumi’s life. Although Gojo’s flamboyant and carefree personality often seemed to annoy Megumi, their interactions throughout the series revealed a deep mutual respect. From the very beginning, Gojo saw great potential within Megumi. He often encouraged and pushed Megumi to exceed his limits. Gojo even believed that Megumi was one of the few individuals who could surpass him one day.

Due to his stoic and reserved nature, Megumi never expressed his gratitude outright to Gojo. Instead, their bond have been reflected in moments of quiet understanding and mutual yet unspoken trust. It can also be interpreted that Megumi’s will to live and fight for others, in spite of his skepticism may mirror Gojo’s philosophy of protecting the weak and challenging societal norms.

Does Gojo Tell Megumi About His Father?

In their first meeting itself, Gojo was about to tell Megumi the truth about his father. However, Megumi stopped him by saying he wasn’t interested in learning anything about his father. As such, the two never got the opportunity to have a full conversation about Toji and how his last words led to Gojo taking Megumi in his care.

That said, before Gojo went off to face Sukuna in the Battle of the Strongest, he left a letter for Megumi. In this letter, in his usual humorous and sarcastic manner, Gojo revealed that Megumi’s father was dead, and the one who took his life was none other than Gojo himself. Reading this caused Megumi to burst into laughter. His reaction was certainly not a surprise, especially since he hardly ever cared or even knew about his father in the first place.

Although Gojo may not have formally adopted Megumi in Jujutsu Kaisen, he was undeniably a strong, supportive figure in his life. He saved Megumi from being sold off to the Zen’in Clan and facing the harshness and corruption of the Jujutsu world. Moreover, Gojo gave Megumi a fairly independent life where he could become a powerful sorcerer and surpass him one day.
