Sanemi Shinazugawa from the Demon Slayer series has gained plenty of traction, especially after the Hashira Training arc. He was first introduced as a hot-blooded Hashira with an intense bloodlust. However, manga readers will know that circumstances made him this way. His interactions with Genya Shinazugawa shocked the fanbase.

There is one specific interaction that took place in the Hashira Training arc. The Wind Hashira lunged at Genya with the intention to gouge his eyes out. Tanjiro Kamado intervened and saved the younger sibling. This only angered the Hashira further. Fans were concerned for Genya, and there was one question in particular that was floating around on the internet – does Sanemi hate Genya?

No, Sanemi does not hate Genya in Demon Slayer. Sanemi doesn’t want his younger brother in the Demon Slayer Corps. He wants his brother to enjoy a quiet life while he kills every demon and protects him from the shadows.

Does the Wind Hashira hate his younger brother? No, he does not hate Genya. That being said, he does not like the fact that Genya is in the Demon Slayer Corps. A lot happened when they were children. The duo underwent some of the most traumatizing experiences. It changed their lives completely. The event in question showed Sanemi his true potential and that he had a special set of skills that could help him kill demons. As a child, he went around killing demons without a Nichirin Blade.

Sanemi’s hatred for demons stems from the death of his siblings and mother. Genya’s accusations didn’t help Sanemi either. He resolved to kill every single demon and protect his younger brother. He didn’t want to lose any more of his family. This is why he was extremely angry when he learned that Genya joined the Demon Slayer Corps. Genya is also one of the only demon hunters who cannot use Total Concentration Breathing.

Sanemi realizes the shortcomings in his younger brother and therefore wants him to enjoy a quiet life. Seeing him battle out demons despite being objectively weaker angered him. His reaction to Genya’s death shows just how much he loved his brother.

Nature of Sanemi and Genya’s Relationship in Demon Slayer

Sanemi and Genya Shinazugawa don’t really get along well. Genya respects Sanemi and looks up to him. He also accused Sanemi of killing their mother. This put a massive strain on their relationship. There isn’t a lot of affection between the two characters. There is little to no communication to begin with.

It’s rare to see them interact in the first place. However, we get a glimpse of what their interactions look like. The Hashira Training arc gave the fanbase a good idea of what their dynamic is like. It’s clear that Genya is trying to fix his mistakes. He wants to be on good terms with his brother. However, Sanemi believes that his brother is better off away from the world of demons and demon hunters. As the elder sibling, it’s his job to protect his brother, and he will do it even if it costs him his life.

That being said, Sanemi is too consumed in his own anger. Anger from his brother’s accusations, his inability to save his other siblings, and the sadness from killing his own mother are all too much for him to bear. This is why he portrays himself as someone who has no heart. It’s easier for him to push his brother away, allowing him to fight freely without worrying about the loss of his brother.

Sanemi and Genya’s Backstories in Demon Slayer

Sanemi was the eldest son among the seven children in his family. He was born to an abusive father who was killed at some point. From that point onwards, he and Genya resolved to take care of the rest of the family.

One fateful night, his mother had turned into a demon. She entered their house and killed all of Genya and Sanemi’s siblings. Since it was dark, Genya thought that it was a wolf. Sanemi tackled the demon just before she could get her hands on Genya. He sought help in a frantic state. However, when he returned, he saw that the “wolf” he killed was none other than their own mother. Genya accused his older brother of killing their mother. This is when the siblings drifted apart.

Sanemi decided to leave his brother behind and hunt demons all by himself. He realized that his blood left the demons in an inebriated state. This is why he was able to kill them with ease. In fact, he was able to kill numerous demons at a young age even though he didn’t have a Nichirin Blade. Eventually, he joined the Demon Slayer Corps and became a Hashira.

Genya Shinazugawa doesn’t receive much screen time in the manga series. However, he utilizes his time very well. He assisted in the death of Kokushibo, the Upper Moon 1 demon. Genya unfortunately succumbs to his injuries and dies on the battlefield. Despite being cut in half, he consumes Kokushibo’s hair. With whatever little life force he has left, he takes aim with his Nichirin Gun and applies his demonic abilities to the bullet. The bullet turns into vines and holds Kokushibo in place, allowing Gyomei and Sanemi to deliver the final blow.

Sanemi suffers as he witnesses his only remaining family die before him. As the elder brother, he took the responsibility for his brother’s safety. However, he was unable to hold onto his word, watching his only brother die right before his eyes.

Conclusion

In conclusion, Sanemi does not hate Genya in Demon Slayer. He harbored a certain degree of anger. However, that anger stemmed from a lot of sources and not just Genya. The death of his siblings, being forced to kill his own mother, who turned into a demon, being accused of killing his mother, seeing his brother enter the Demon Slayer Corps despite being weak. All of these things added to his anger. However, he loved his brother and wanted to protect him until the very end. Sanemi shouldered the burden of an entire family all by himself and ultimately watched his only remaining family die before his eyes.
