Ghost of Yotei is the next entry in Sony and Sucker Punch’s beloved PlayStation exclusive franchise based in Feudal Japan.
Sony’s State of Play 2024 closed out with the announcement for Ghost of Yotei, the highly anticipated sequel to Ghost of Tsushima. The title will be a massive departure from the original in terms of its settings and characters. The State of Play presentation for the game gave us a limited yet significant look at what the game has to offer for fans of the franchise. Additionally, PlayStation also released a blog post detailing what players can expect from Ghost of Yotei.

What we know about Ghost of Yotei so far
As suggested by the game’s title, Ghost of Yotei strays away from the island of Tsushima. It will take place in the sprawling landscapes surrounding the massive Mount Yotei. The area is known as Hokkaido in the modern day. The title takes place in the year 1603, 300 years after the events of the original saw Jin Sakai during the Mongol invasion.
Given the massive time jump, Yotei also features a brand new female samurai named Atsu as the protagonist. This will be a relief for fans of the original. Since Ghost of Tsushima effectively closed the book on Jin Sakai’s story. Although not much is known about Atsu as a character, the developers, Sucker Punch, have explained how the setting greatly varies from the original. They highlighted the absence of organized Samurai clans seen in the first game.
Finally, Ghost of Yotei will also be Sucker Punch’s first title to be built from the ground up for the PlayStation 5. This essentially confirms that the developers will be taking advantage of the PS5’s capabilities. Not only will this impact the visual fidelity of the game, but also bring new mechanics to the series. Ghost of Yotei will see a release in 2025. However, an exact release date is not currently known. Fans will surely be keeping an eye out for any updates regarding the long-awaited sequel.
