Most battle shounen anime have their own kinds of power systems, captivating audiences with unique fight sequences. In Black Clover, grimoires fulfill this role by providing different kinds of magic to their users. These have helped the series to show off its creativity while allowing users to deepen their mastery of magic. So, how many types of grimoires are there in Black Clover?

According to the current information provided in Black Clover, the Clover Kingdom has three types of grimoires, while the Spade, Diamond, and Heart Kingdoms have one type of grimoire each. There are also unnamed grimoires and unique types of magic used by the Hino Country. Let us take a closer look at these.

Most people in Black Clover are blessed with the ability to use magic distinctive to themselves. Grimoires are books made of mana that significantly amplify the spells a mage performs. These range from increasing the explosiveness of an ability to teaching them more complex spells.

Once a person turns 15, they can attend a grimoire ceremony to receive a book of their own. These often reflect their wielder and grow in power along with them. In the Clover Kingdom, these grimoires are housed in the Grimoire Tower and overseen by tower masters.

While we were initially led to believe that only the Clover Kingdom uses grimoires, we soon learn that all surrounding nations use them too. However, their exact ceremonies have not been explained yet in the story.

Grimoires in Black Clover vary based on their nation of origin as well as their properties. Only those found in the Clover Kingdom are differentiated based on the leaves on their covers. These include:

Three-Leaf Grimoires

A grimoire with three leaves is the most common kind found in the Clover Kingdom. They represent the theological virtues of Christianity: faith, hope, and love. These generally have standard magic spells but can grow extremely strong along with their users.

Four-Leaf Grimoires

Along with the three virtues of a three-leaf grimoire, the fourth leaf in this grimoire represents good luck. Only highly talented mages receive these grimoires, making them exceptionally rare. The magic of four-leaf grimoires is also more complex. As seen in Yuno’s case, he could apply wind, creation and spirit magic.

Five-Leaf Grimoires

Five-Leaf Grimoires are the rarest in Black Clover and are particularly feared. When a four-leaf grimoire’s owner succumbs to despair, their intense emotions actively transform the book. This makes it turn dark and develop a fifth leaf. Additionally, even when the wielder dies, the grimoire still exists, waiting for a new owner.

The reason these are feared is that five-leaf grimoires can be possessed by devils, who can tap into the book’s true powers. This can lead to the original owner being corrupted and manipulated.

Along with the above, each kingdom in Black Clover has its own grimoire. These are not differentiated based on any noticeable aspect but are extremely strong. These are:

  • Spade Grimoires
  • Diamond Grimoires
  • Heart Grimoires
  • Unknown Grimoires

Apart from the above, the Hino Country uses its equivalent of grimoires, called scrolls. As the name suggests, they use rolls of paper to cast magic, rather than books.

What Are the Most Powerful Kinds of Magic in Black Clover

The strongest type of magic used in Black Clover is time magic, used by Julius Novachrono in his three-leaf grimoire. This allows him to both accelerate and decelerate time, greatly hindering enemies. With the former, Julius can rapidly age enemies and turn them to dust, while the latter allows him to stop time and catch the attacks of others.

Julius’ application of this is so ingenious that he could store the magic and be resurrected after death. He could also view the futures of opponents.

Along with this, dark magic, used by Yami Sukehiro, is yet another powerful kind of magic that allows one to manipulate darkness. Even without a grimoire, Yami could absorb other kinds of magic and cut through entire dimensions. It is slower than light magic but is more flexible, permitting attack and defense in both long and short ranges.

While we have seen the strongest kinds of magic, there exists an ability that can nullify all of them: Anti-Magic. Asta uses this power.

Is Asta the Strongest Grimoire User

Asta’s five-leaf grimoire in Black Clover makes him the natural opponent of all mages. He can counter any kind of magic with just a swing of his sword. With his katana, he can also send long-range slashes of anti-magic at his opponents.

After pairing up with Liebe, Asta can enter his “Unite” form, sharing powers with the devil and greatly enhancing his abilities. Since he possesses all these strengths, there is no doubt that Asta is one of the strongest grimoire users in Black Clover.

However, it is still too soon to tell if he is the single strongest. This is because Julius has shown himself to be a very adept and smart user of his grimoire. Additionally, since his true form – Lucius Zogratis is blessed with multiple more kinds of magic, the protagonist has not yet gotten to the stage of beating him.

Another competitor for Asta is his rival, Yuno. Right when Asta seemed to be overtaking him, Yuno received his second grimoire in the series. With these, he can use wind magic and star magic. Paired with the spirit Sylph, he is another very powerful user currently in Black Clover.

Therefore, Asta is likely going to become the strongest by the end of Black Clover, being the main character. However, he is still only a contender for that title, considering all the other powerful characters in the series.

Conclusion

Grimoires add a layer of depth to the tried-and-tested concept of magic in Black Clover. By forming identities of their own, they lead to exciting moments whenever revealed. As the series proceeds, we are sure to be introduced to several new kinds of magic and interesting ways of application that keep stunning us.
