Past her cheerful demeanor lies a dark backstory that significantly drives her motivations. Who Is Shinobu Kocho in Demon Slayer?
The Insect Hashira Shinobu Kocho is introduced in Demon Slayer as a polite and approachable figure who always sports a gentle smile on her face. She had a close bond with Giyu and helped the main characters at Mount Natagumo.
Her adeptness with poisons and skill in treating others made her a fan-favorite character in the series. However, as the storyline proceeded, we found that Shinobu’s pleasantness was a facade she put on. It would not be an overestimate to say that no one hated demons as much as her in the entire series.
Having lost her family at a young age, she and her elder sister lived together in the Butterfly Mansion and took care of orphaned girls. Unfortunately, Shinobu ended up losing her sibling and many of the Tsuguko under her to demons too. This only drove her further towards the edge, showing ruthlessness towards any and every demon in the series.
Shinobu Kocho’s Role in the Infinity Castle Arc
Shinobu Kocho’s climatic role in the Infinity Castle Arc is a tragic yet fitting one. Soon after the Demon Slayers were taken into Muzan’s domain, Shinobu ran into the Upper Moon Rank 2 demon Doma.
Upon discovering that this demon was responsible for her sister’s death, she furiously launched attacks using her Insect Breathing techniques. Unfortunately, Doma’s superior body as a demon and his Blood Demon Art could easily overpower Shinobu. Her poisons were also effortlessly countered by Doma.
As Shinobu was exhausted and beaten down, Doma absorbed and killed her with a smile on his face. In her final moments, Shinobu signaled her disciple Kanao who was nearby on Doma’s abilities. Paired with Inosuke’s Beast Breathing, they were able to put up a valiant fight against Doma.
When the demon made them fight with his clones and was attempting to leave, however, his body broke down. It was then revealed that Shinobu had willingly sacrificed herself to poison Doma from the inside. She had been consuming wisteria poison worth 37 kilograms for over a year, fatal to the strongest of demons.
This made Doma’s body extremely weak, allowing Kanao to deal the finishing blow to him. In the decisive battle against Muzan, a drug created by Shinobu and Tamayo was crucial to the demon king’s defeat. This toxin made him age 50 years in a minute and destroyed his cells, greatly reducing his powers. These let the Demon Slayers overcome this figure of fear.
Hence, through her selfless sacrifice, Shinobu played an unparalleled role in defeating two of the strongest antagonists in the series.
Shinobu Kocho’s Strengths and Abilities
Shinobu is not very physically strong, but her Insect Breathing compensates for it and provides her with the technique to cut off demons’ heads. She is gifted with immense speed and always targets the vital points of her opponents with her poisonous sword. Moves such as the Dance of the Centipede: Hundred-Legged Zigzag are unorthodox, rapid, and destructive to the degree where even Doma appreciated its power.
Her medical expertise was used to treat both demon slayers and come up with drugs that could torment demons. This was best seen in the four-stage drug she developed with Tamayo. Most importantly, Shinobu is willing to go to any lengths to achieve her objectives.
She made her entire body poisonous just to defeat an Upper Moon and remained defiant till the very end. Her hatred of demons is her greatest asset, capable of coming up with ingenious tactics for victory.
Is Shinobu Kocho the Strongest Hashira in Demon Slayer?
If we looked at it through conventional means, then Shinobu would be the weakest among the other Hashira. She did not possess the brute strength of Gyomei and Sanemi and her reflexes were not as fast as Muichiro and Tengen either.
However, Shinobu’s role does not depend on being on the frontlines but more in support. She nurtured the next generation directly, imparting her medical prowess and battle acumen to her pupils. She was also crucial to curing the injured Demon Slayers and coming up with poisons to kill demons.
Shinobu herself realized that she wasn’t as strong as the others, pushing her to take drastic means to defeat her enemies. Hence, if the Hashira were to fight against each other, Shinobu’s unyielding determination to win would allow her to be an opponent who would be dangerous to even the strongest.
