Venom is finally a playable character in a Spider-Man game once again after years. There has been a great amount of hype surrounding Spider-Man 2 from the moment Insomniac first announced Venom to be the game’s main antagonist in their Spider-Man 2 announcement trailer on September 21, 2021. Another pleasant surprise for gamers came when developers announced that Venom was not just the game’s main antagonist but also a playable character.
Fans can play as Venom in a single mission in Spider-Man 2 toward the end of the game’s second act. This mission is named “Don’t Be Scared”, and it takes place in the Oscorp Tower.
How To Play as Venom in Spider-Man 2
Spoiler alert for this section of the article. Although Peter Parker and Miles Morales are the two main playable characters in Spider-Man 2, fans can still play as Venom. But in the game, Venom has limited playability, similar to the Mary Jane Watson-focused missions in Marvel’s Spider-Man games. The mission named “Don’t Be Scared” lets gamers take control of Venom.
In this mission, we see Peter, after successfully removing the symbiote from himself, go to the Oscorp Tower to convince his friend Harry that he shouldn’t use the symbiote. However, Harry is dying from a sickness in the game, and he rejects Peter’s proposition, saying that Peter doesn’t want Harry to be saved and wants to see him die instead.
After this heated conversation between Peter and Harry, the symbiote frees himself from the container in Peter’s hands and bonds with Harry, transforming into Venom. During this segment, players take control of Venom, and their objective is to escape from the Oscorp Tower, ravaging through the building and fighting guards along the way.
The Symbiote is Not Your Only Problem
The game reveals Venom as the first villain and the final boss, but he isn’t the only one. Spider-Man 2 features iconic Spider-Man villains, including Kraven the Hunter, Lizard, and Sandman. Kraven is one of the more interesting antagonists in the game.
Kraven’s actions directly drive the plot of Spider-Man 2. The game sees Kraven The Hunter travelling to New York to hunt the superpowered beings who live there. With the big cast of antagonists in Spider-Man 2, Venom and Kraven are the main two villains headlining the game and receiving the most attention.
Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 sees two protagonists in the game, Peter and Miles. Gamers can play as both, and while free-roaming with one character in the city, players can see the other protagonist randomly showing up and helping them in the game.
If you liked swinging through the map in the previous installment, then don’t worry; Spider-Man 2 has an even bigger map, now with added Brooklyn and Queens. Players can also use the newly added web-wings to soar through places with no buildings at high speed. The PC port for Spider-Man 2 is coming out on January 30, 2025.
