The Demon Slayer anime series has plenty of elements that made the show a massive hit. One of the most important aspects of this series is the characters. There are plenty of characters in the show, and almost all of them have compelling backstories that make them interesting to the viewer.

The protagonist and the main antagonists are some of the most well-known ones. It’s not uncommon to have characters related to each other, even if they have polar opposite roles. The protagonist and antagonist of the Star Wars movies were related. Similarly, fans seem to have one question in mind – is Kibutsuji Muzan related to Tanjiro Kamado in Demon Slayer?

To get a definitive answer to this question, one must look into the Demon Slayer manga to gain a deeper understanding of the two characters’ lineages.

There are plenty of characters in the Demon Slayer series who are related to each other. In fact, anime writers do this quite often in anime series. When two characters with stark differences in personalities are related, this often creates a state of tension in the atmosphere. This, in turn, keeps fans glued to the screen.

Tanjiro Kamado is the protagonist of the anime series. He joined the Demon Slayer Corps at a young age. Muzan’s atrocities drove Tanjiro to pick up a sword and defend his sister. She was the only remaining family he had. Therefore, he needed to do everything he could to ensure that his sister would turn back into a human at some point in the anime series. Thus began his journey as a demon hunter.

However, his family members were humble coal merchants. In fact, Tanjiro would carry the coal and travel to the neighboring village to sell it when his father fell sick.

Some assumed that Tanjiro was related to the legendary swordsman Yoriichi Tsugikuni. However, that wasn’t the case. Sumiyoshi Kamado was his ancestor and the oldest notable member of the Kamado family that we know of. Sumiyoshi wasn’t a demon hunter either.

However, he was from the Sengoku era and befriended Yoriichi Tsugikuni. The latter saved Sumiyoshi’s wife and child from a demon. Sumiyoshi befriended him, and he spent time imitating Yoriichi’s Sun Breathing movements. This is Tanjiro’s lineage in the Demon Slayer series.

Muzan’s Backstory in the Demon Slayer Series

Muzan is the first-ever demon to have existed. His demonic transformation was the result of incomplete medication. He was afflicted with an unknown disease from the time he was born. A Heian doctor tended to him, and the medication took a lot of time before it showed results. Muzan’s impatience pushed him to a point of no return. He killed the doctor in a fit of rage.

However, he started to see massive differences in his abilities. He recovered, but he could no longer expose his body to sunlight, and he felt the urge to consume human flesh. While demons can’t really procreate, it seems like there is one person who is related to Muzan.

However, we need to address the question posed above – is Tanjiro related to Muzan in Demon Slayer? No, Tanjiro and Muzan are not related by blood at all. They hail from two very different bloodlines and are, therefore, not connected.

Who is Kagaya Ubuyashiki in Demon Slayer?

As mentioned earlier, there is one person who is a direct descendant of Muzan in the anime series. While they didn’t mention the phrase “direct descendant,” this is the assumption since the mysterious person in question hails from the same clan as Muzan. The clan in question is none other than the Ubuyashiki Clan. Kagaya Ubuyashiki is, therefore, related to Kibutsuji Muzan in the Demon Slayer series.

Moreover, this connection serves as an explanation for why the male members of the Ubuyashiki Clan suffer from an unknown disease and die before they turn 25. They were afflicted with a curse since Muzan was the first-ever demon to exist, and he was from the same clan.

Therefore, they decided to create the Demon Slayer Corps with the sole intention of putting an end to Muzan’s wicked ways. That is why the Ubuyashiki Clan spearheaded the mission to kill every single demon in their country. In fact, their curse was lifted when Muzan was killed toward the end of the manga series. Kagaya Ubuyashiki’s progeny lived on for over 100 years, becoming one of the oldest living humans in the country.

Kibutsuji Muzan suffered from a fate that he deserved. He slowly died due to exposure to sunlight. The entire Demon Slayer Corps came together to stop him, and they managed to do it successfully. A lot of lives were sacrificed in the process. However, their lives did not go in vain since the Demon King was finally dead.

Tanjiro, on the other hand, nearly suffered from a fate far worse than that. Muzan’s desperation is seen until the very end when he turns Tanjiro into a demon who conquered the sun. He was on the verge of killing everyone who was present around him. Luckily, Kanao had a vial of medicine that was crafted specifically to undo the demonic transformation. She used the Flower Breathing final form to create an opening and administer the medicine. Moments later, Tanjiro reverted to his human form, and the danger was averted.

Conclusion

Is Tanjiro related to Kibutsuji Muzan in Demon Slayer? No, Tanjiro Kamado is not related to Muzan in the anime and manga series. Tanjiro hails from the Kamado Clan, whereas Muzan hails from the Ubuyashiki Clan. Since these two hail from two different clans, they are not related by blood. However, fate and other elements like the Breath of the Sun connected them, and Muzan was destined to die by the swords of the Demon Slayer Corps.
