Is One Punch Man manga finished? Take a look at the current status of the manga series and its anime adaptation.
The One Punch Man series gained widespread popularity among fans ever since the release of its anime adaptation in 2015. Its anime is undoubtedly one of the best modern Seinen adaptations with top-notch animation and voice acting. The anime has a long way to go before it catches up with the manga and the original webcomic. Nonetheless, it has a special place in the hearts of many.
Originally created by the artist ONE as a webcomic series, One Punch Man’s status was further elevated in the manga industry due to Yusuke Murata’s breathtaking illustrations in its manga adaptation. However, as the series continues gaining momentum, many fans have often wondered whether the One Punch Man manga has reached its conclusion.
To answer the question – no, the One Punch Man manga is not yet finished. In fact, both ONE’s original webcomic and Yusuke Murata’s manga adaptation are still ongoing. As such, fans can rest assured that there is still plenty of content left for them to enjoy. With that in mind, let us take a deeper look into the status of the One Punch Man manga, its anime adaptation, and more.
The Current Status of One Punch Man Manga
The manga adaptation of the One Punch Man series by Yusuke Murata returned from its hiatus a few months ago. The new chapters aren’t released on a weekly basis. However, it continues to adapt ONE’s original webcomic in a faithful manner, with its usual breathtaking art style.
Following the epic conclusion of the Monster Association arc, the One Punch Man manga entered the Neo Heroes Saga in chapter 171. It shifted the focus to the restructuring of the Hero Association and the emergence of a new group called the Neo Heroes. This saga is still ongoing in the manga, and is currently adapting its 4th arc, titled the Ninjas arc.
Interestingly, Murata completely redrew the Ninjas arc, from chapter 195-202. The purpose behind redrawing the chapters is to supposedly add depth to characters and recontextualize events, which would in turn enhance the story. Some of the changes in the redrawn chapters include more focus on characters like Blast, Speed-o’-Sound Sonic, and Flashy Flash, and more emphasis on Blast and Empty Void’s backstories and abilities. The latest chapter of the manga (at the time of the article’s writing), i.e. chapter 211, titled ‘Plan’, was released on December 26, 2024.
How Much of the One Punch Man Manga Is Left To Be Animated?
So far, Studio Madhouse and Studio J.C. Staff have adapted a total of 84 chapters of the One Punch Man manga in the anime. Season 1 of the anime, which was produced by Studio Madhouse, covered around 37 chapters of the manga in 12 episodes. On the other hand, One Punch Man season 2, which was produced by Studio J.C. Staff, covered the manga till chapter 84 over the course of 12 episodes as well.
Overall, the first two seasons of the One Punch Man anime adapted 14 arcs and the first 7 chapters of the 15th arc of the manga, i.e. the Monster Association arc. To be precise, the anime adaptation of the series has covered only 84 out of 211 manga chapters so far. At the time of the article’s writing, approximately 127 chapters are yet to be animated.
How Many Arcs Can One Punch Man Season 3 Cover?
As mentioned earlier, One Punch Man season 1 adapted 37 chapters of the manga. These 37 chapters were covered in 12 episodes of the anime. However, in terms of arcs, about 8 arcs from the manga were covered in the first season of the anime. As for season 2, a total of 6 arcs and the first 7 chapters of the Monster Association arc were covered in the anime. In all, a total of 14 arcs and a part of the 15th arc from the manga have been adapted in 24 episodes of the anime so far.
The upcoming One Punch Man season 3 is also expected to have 12 episodes. If it follows the same pacing as the second season, then it is highly likely that season 3 will adapt around 50 chapters from the manga. However, in that case, One Punch Man season 3 will not be able to cover the entirety of the Monster Association arc, given that the arc begins from chapter 78 and lasts till chapter 170. This makes it the longest arc in the series. As such, this arc would only be completely covered in a potential season 4.
Should You Read the One Punch Man Manga or Wait for the Anime’s Return?
“Should I read the One Punch Man manga, or wait for the anime’s return?” – This is a question that almost every single fan of the series has asked themselves at some point. A major reason for this is because the anime takes an extensive break before releasing a new season. For instance, season 1 was released in 2015, whereas season 2 was released in 2019. Since season 3 took almost 6 years to get a release date, many fans have resorted to reading the manga.
Fans usually struggle with the decision between waiting for their favorite series to get animated and diving into the manga in order to know what happens next. For One Punch Man however, the decision could not be easier. The anime gives viewers the thrill of witnessing some of the series’ most iconic battles being animated, accompanied by stellar voice acting and music.
However, Yusuke Murata’s artwork is nothing short of a masterpiece. His hyper-realistic illustrations bring an unparalleled level of detail and intensity to every panel, making the manga a far superior alternative to the anime. That being said, the choice between reading the manga or waiting for the anime is entirely up to your preference.
Conclusion
All in all, the One Punch Man manga is far from over. In fact, it still has a long way to go before it catches up to the original webcomic. As for anime-only fans, the wait for season 3 will undoubtedly be worth it. As the series gears up to adapt its most epic arc yet, the hype for the upcoming season will be through the roof by the time of its release.
