JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: Stone Ocean is the sixth part of the JoJo’s universe, featuring its first female protagonist. Created by Hirohiko Araki, it follows Jolyne Kujo, daughter of Jotaro, as she is sent to prison after being tricked.

Under imprisonment, she gets roped into the complex world of Stands and a conspiracy that could impact the entire world. Having to face a follower of Dio, Enrico Pucci, Jolyne will have to carry on the legacy of the Joestar bloodline.

JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: Stone Ocean is renowned in more ways than one. Even going past its prison setting, creative Stands and unique characters, its ending is significantly different from the other parts.

The final chapters of JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: Stone Ocean follows Jolyne, Jotaro, and their allies facing off against Pucci. Equipped with the Made in Heaven Stand, however, the antagonist has become too powerful for them to defeat.

By gaining the ability to accelerate time, Pucci can even combat Jotaro’s time-stop ability. He reveals his goal of wanting to reset the universe so everyone can achieve happiness. For this to happen, he starts killing off the entire cast till only Jolyne and Emporio are left.

Wanting to save Emporio, Jolyne goes toe to toe with Pucci and attempts to distract him before finally dying. After escaping, Emporio finds that time is accelerating at such a pace that he is now in a different universe. Jolyne and Jotaro are in front of him in prison, but their personalities are different.

At this point, Pucci interferes, stating that he would kill Emporio. Initially terrified, Emporio turns out to be the unlikely hero. He reveals Weather Report’s disc that he had hidden away and makes use of the stand. Through this, he manipulates the oxygen to incapacitate Pucci before finally killing him with a devastating blow.

Left with none of his acquaintances, Emporio keeps wandering after the universe has reset again. In this alternate reality, however, he runs into people who are the spitting image of Jolyne, Anasui, Ermes, and Weather Report. While they have no memories since they are different individuals, Emporio rejoins his friends in a different timeline.

Fates of the Main Characters As of JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: Stone Ocean Ending

This part of JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure features multiple main characters, each of whom has memorable endings. We will not be considering their revival in the new timeline since they are not a continuation or rebirth of the same character either. These include:

  • Jolyne Kujo – Jolyne sacrifices herself in a final standoff against Pucci to ensure Emporio survives.
  • Jotaro Kujo – Jotaro’s time stop was rendered useless due to Pucci’s acceleration. While trying to save Jolyne from falling knives, Pucci takes advantage and cuts his face in half to kill him.
  • Anasui and Ermes Costello- Both Anasui and Ermes die in the final struggle against Pucci. Anasui dies first when facing Made in Heaven, while Ermes dies at the same time as Jotaro. All their bodies are seen withering away when the timeline rapidly moves forward.
  • Weather Report – As the first brutal battle Pucci faces in the final chapters, Weather Report comes close to victory before getting distracted by a car crash. This allows Pucci to stab and kill him.
  • Emporio – Being the lone survivor of the original timeline, Emporio carries on the memory of the original Joestars. Following the reset of the world, he joins the alternate versions of Jolyne, Anasui, and others as they ride off in a car.

Why the JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: Stone Ocean Ending is Controversial

The ending of JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: Stone Ocean is so controversial because it completely shifts the paradigm of the JoJo universe. By ending the timeline we are used to and taking the story to a new one, Araki decided to wipe the slate clean in the battle between Joestars and evil.

While it could take place in another form, this would not have the narrative continuity of the previous parts. Fans invested in the lineage of this iconic family could get devastated at it is finally coming to an end.

Additionally, this was a rare instance where nearly the entire cast was killed in the ending. This was a bold choice that played with the heartstrings of fans. At the same time, showing the same cast as another version in the new timeline could remove some emotional weight from the scene. By moving past the central conflicts of the series in this new world, critics argue it could also diminish the ending of the previous parts.

Nevertheless, supporters of Araki have always loved the creator for not sticking to any established norm in writing. Resetting the story and not being burdened by continuity would allow his creative genes to be completely explored. It also aligns with JoJo’s themes of the cyclical nature of fate and conflict, making it bittersweet.

The greatest testimony supporting Araki is the fact that the very next part, Steel Ball Run, is one of the highest-rated manga ever.

As fans would expect, after Stone Ocean, JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure goes to a completely different setting in Part 7 – Steel Ball Run. In this alternate universe, we are taken to an old American environment where characters gather for a cross-country race with great prizes for the victors.

The new main characters, Johnny Joestar and Gyro Zeppeli, join this race, competing on Steel Balls and facing all kinds of challenges. Hence, familiar names and concepts such as Stands still exist in the universe. However, it does not continue the storyline of any previous part and stands on its own.

Conclusion

The ending of JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: Stone Ocean is a source of great debate. Some believe it is the best decision Araki could have taken, while others believe he faltered. No matter what fans think of the ending, they agree that it is fitting for JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure, which has never stuck to conventional storytelling.
