Tamayo in Demon Slayer is one of the most underrated characters, owing to her contribution despite the lack of screen time
Plenty of characters in Demon Slayer play an integral part in Muzan’s defeat. The Demon King is the most powerful villain in the story, and it took the combined efforts of all the demon hunters and other members of the Corps to defeat him. This is a show that lays a great deal of emphasis on team effort.
One of the reasons why fans love this shonen title is because Tanjiro doesn’t single-handedly defeat all powerful villains. However, those who haven’t read the manga will be shocked to know that one of the most important characters in Muzan’s defeat was a demon – Tamayo.
She is the only demon, barring Nezuko, who was introduced as someone who hated Muzan. She found a workaround to sustain herself without having to kill human beings. But she is still a demon and is therefore forced to consume blood. However, she consumes blood and the flesh of human corpses.
What anime-only fans don’t realize is that Tamayo is criminally underrated in Demon Slayer. She receives very little screen time. However, she tipped the scales in favor of the entire human race and saved them. Let’s take a look at why Tamayo was important and how she contributed to his death in Demon Slayer. Before we do that, it is important to take a look at Tamayo’s history with Muzan and Yoriichi Tsugikuni.
Tamayo’s Connection to Muzan and Yoriichi in Demon Slayer
Yoriichi Tsugikuni was a legendary swordsman who single-handedly overwhelmed Muzan. In fact, the Demon King was forced to flee from the scene. If the Demon Slayer Corps had Yoriichi, then how did Muzan survive and why didn’t they kill him?
Muzan had one ability in particular which allowed him to escape from Yoriichi. He split his body into 1800 pieces, of which only 1500 were cut down. Muzan ran away and then proceeded to regenerate slowly. Tamayo was present during this fight. This was also the time Muzan lost control over Tamayo.
She dedicated the rest of her life to research and helping demons slowly revert to their human form. Therefore, her knowledge was incredibly valuable, and it ultimately played a massive role in defeating Muzan in the animanga series. This event in particular was crucial. Yoriichi might not have defeated Muzan, however, he revealed a weakness that helped the demon hunters kill him at the end of the manga series.
Tamayo’s Contribution to Killing Muzan in Demon Slayer
As mentioned earlier, Tamayo dedicated all of her time to research. She spent years conducting research on demon blood in an attempt to find a cure that would help demons retrieve their humanity. That’s when Tanjiro came into the picture. He helped Tamayo accelerate her progress by slaying Upper Moon demons and sending her blood samples. Through this, she analyzed Upper Moon demons’ blood samples, which were pretty close to Muzan’s blood type.
After years of research, she managed to create a drug that would effectively help Nezuko turn into a human being. Towards the end of the series, Nezuko completely retrieves her humanity. Furthermore, the analysis of the blood samples was crucial in creating a drug that would help the demon hunters kill Muzan. She partnered up with Shinobu Kocho and created a drug that worked in different stages.
Tamayo and Shinobu’s Anti-Kibutsuji Drug in Demon Slayer
This drug had a total of 4 stages. Each stage had a clear purpose, and it would weaken Muzan in different ways. The first stage of the drug is called the human conversion stage. This stage of the drug was created well in advance. This component was the very drug that Nezuko consumed. Muzan slowly started regaining his humanity which weakened his demonic abilities.
The second stage was called the biological aging stage. The aim of the drug was to force Muzan’s body to age rapidly. Each minute aged his body by 50 years. During the fight, Muzan’s body aged by over 9000 years, which significantly impacted his combat abilities. This allowed the demon hunters to go toe-to-toe with the Demon King.
The third stage was called the splitting prevention stage. As the name suggests, this stopped Muzan from splitting his body into 1800 parts. This completely stopped him from splitting his body.
The final stage deteriorated his cells. This stage slowly destroyed his cells which weakened him further. This four-stage drug was the reason why demon hunters and Hashira alike were even able to land blows, let alone defeat him.
How did Muzan die in Demon Slayer?
The drug slowed him down and it allowed the demon hunters to launch an attack. Therefore, the Demon Slayer Corps managed to delay the fight until the sun came up. The only demon to have overcome the sun was Nezuko. However, Muzan hadn’t found a way to do the same. This is why he pursued Nezuko furiously.
The Demon King tried everything he could to hide from the sun. however, he succumbed to the injuries and died eventually. However, he transferred all of his blood into Tanjiro in his dying moments. Therefore, the protagonist not only becomes a demon but also conquers the sun.
Luckily, Shinobu had created another batch of the drug and handed it to Kanao in case of an emergency. She managed to evade Tanjiro’s attacks and injected him with the drug. Since Tanjiro wasn’t a demon for a long period of time, the drug worked immediately. This is how the Demon Slayer Corps overcame Muzan in the manga series.
Conclusion
Tamayo and Shinobu are the most underrated characters in the series. The former was a demon who managed to free herself from Muzan’s control. Additionally, she researched demon blood for years until she was in a position to create a drug. Ubuyashiki approached her and asked her to join Shinobu to create the drug together. The duo spearheaded the research, and they created the drug that would go on to help the demon hunters kill Muzan once and for all.
