What Happened to Tamayo in Demon Slayer

All demons were under the total control of Muzan, except for one. Here’s what happened to Tamayo in Demon Slayer.

Tamayo is a supporting character in Demon Slayer. She made her first appearance in the eighth episode when Tanjiro encountered Muzan for the first time. Along with her faithful assistant, Yushiro, Tamayo had been researching a cure to turn demons back into humans. She eventually joined forces with the Ubuyashiki. With the clan’s support, she perfected a drug that could kill Muzan.

Tamayo’s dedication came to fruition when the Ubuyashiki successfully lured Muzan to their trap. This is where Tamayo came charging in and shoved her fist into his stomach. However, she had integrated a part of the drug into her body, making it deadly for Muzan, although the effect needed some time. In the end, Tamayo played a huge role in Muzan’s fall. She sacrificed herself and made sure the demon king would never see another day.

In a world where the demon king always held absolute control over his subjects, Tamayo is an outlier. She is a demon, yet she rebelled against the demon king, Muzan. In Demon Slayer logic this should never happen, because every demon that Muzan created was tied to him via a curse. How did Tamayo’s life end up like this? Everything began with her first encounter with the demon king.

Tamayo’s Origin and History With Muzan

Ironically, Tamayo’s and Muzan’s backstories are similar. She was a woman suffering from a terminal illness. In her desperation, she accepted the demon lord’s offer to become one of his subjects. She saw it as the only way for her to keep living and stay beside her family.

However, Tamayo didn’t realize that, as a demon, she would crave human blood. She ended up killing a whole village, and unfortunately, her family was among the humans that ended up dying at her hands. She did try to avenge her family. But Muzan was far stronger, and she ended up defeated and subjugated by him.

In Demon Slayer, Muzan had absolute control over all of his demons. He achieved this by putting on a curse that would kill any demon who dared to even say his name out loud on every demon. For the longest time, nobody could escape Muzan’s grasp. But that changed when Yoriichi, the sun breather, confronted Muzan. Yoriichi was the only man who ever sent the demon king running. Muzan was quickly cut down and reduced to his weakest.

But, he managed to slip away before Yoriichi had the opportunity to finish him off. Seeing the demon lord cowardly retreating, Tamayo’s resolve to avenge her family was reignited. She yelled out his name in frustration, but Muzan’s curse didn’t work. Presumably, it was because of how weak Muzan was at this particular time. From then on, this event inspired her to continue looking for ways to defeat the demon lord.

Tamayo’s Role in the Final Battle

Throughout the whole plot of Demon Slayer, Tamayo had been looking for a way to end Muzan’s reign of terror. Her perseverance started to pay off when she met Tanjiro and Nezuko. It was the first time she met another demon who was unaffected by Muzan aside from herself and Yushiro.

Knowing Muzan was likely to hunt Nezuko, Tamayo asked the siblings to collect blood samples from the Upper Moons. She planned to use these samples to concoct an effective drug to be used against Muzan. Things started to look up for her when the Ubuyashiki invited her to collaborate.

Along with Shinobu, Tamayo successfully perfected the drug that would play a major role in slowing down Muzan. Tamayo’s role proved vital to the demon king’s demise. It’s revealed that her drug also could age the recipient at a rapid rate. This effect caused Muzan to lose his power and energy in the final fight. However, this turn of events cost Tamayo her life.

How Does Tamayo Die in Demon Slayer

Tamayo died at the hands of the demon king. She charged Muzan with the full knowledge that he was way stronger than her. Once she put her hands inside Muzan’s stomach, she never had a chance to escape the ordeal.

Her death is captured in chapter 180 of the Demon Slayer manga. In her final moments, Tamayo blamed Muzan for the death of her family. Even after hundreds of years, her grief was still strong. However, in his arrogance, Muzan crushed her head and ended Tamayo’s life.

At that moment, Yushiro sensed that Tamayo was no more. Killing Tamayo would prove to be a mistake for Muzan. Her death only provoked Yushiro, and it turned out later he became one of the key characters in exposing Muzan to the sun. In his rage, Yushiro successfully got to the Upper Moon Four, Nakiri, who was directly controlling the infinity castle. Thanks to his clever thinking to take advantage of Nakiri’s power, he sent Muzan and the Demon Slayer Corps members to the surface.

Tamayo was a major factor in Muzan’s defeat. She was the second person who had the idea to kill demons with chemicals, aside from Shinobu. But her goals were specifically pointed at Muzan. All her research, from analyzing Nezuko’s blood to her observing the Upper Moons’, was also done with Muzan in mind. She becomes a key character in Demon Slayer, despite being mostly portrayed as working from behind the scenes.

Her death affected Yushiro the most. In their lifetime, Yushiro held an immense affection toward Tamayo. Without her presence, all Yushiro could do was continue living and hold memories of her. After the events in the Infinity Castle arc, he then went on and worked as a painter, mostly creating Tamayo’s image.

Conclusion

Tamayo begins as a supporting character in the Demon Slayer story. However, her role gradually becomes more important as the story grows closer to the final battle. In the end, she played a key role in defeating Muzan with what she did best, medicine and demon biology.

Unfortunately for her, Tamayo didn’t get to enjoy the fruit of her effort. She died at Muzan’s hands after injecting the drug into his body. However, her sacrifice proved to be detrimental. Her drug also had an effect that made Muzan age at a rapid rate. With this, the reign of the demon king came to an end.
