Bleach: Thousand Year Blood-War is one of the most exciting sections of the overall story. The manga completed its course sometime in 2016. It is one of the most beloved shonen titles that has garnered millions of fans all over the world. Naturally, the entire fanbase is gearing up for the conclusion of the series as it’s inching closer towards Yhwach’s final fight.
Interestingly, the show is reeling in newer fans who started watching Bleach: Thousand Year Blood-War without watching some of the older episodes. The question that the newer fans are asking is this—what is the Wandenreich in Bleach: Thousand Year Blood-War?
The Wandenrecih were a group of Quincy who were hidden in the Seireitei and gathered their strength over 1000 years. Yhwach is their leader and they emerged sometime after Sosuke Aizen’s defeat in the Bleach series. The Wandenreich is comprised of some of the most powerful Quincy that were introduced in the anime and manga series.
What Is the Wandenreich in Bleach: Thousand Year Blood-War?
The Quincy were at war with the Shinigami nearly 1000 years ago. They were defeated and the remaining ones fled into the Seireitei. This was a city in Soul Society that was home to many Shinigami. Since the Seireitei had plenty of Reishi, they used to create an invisible space in the “shadows”. This is how the Wandenrecih came into being. Therefore, they are also known as the Invisible Empire. The word Wandenreich is German for “walled empire”.
Yhwach is the leader of the Wandenreich, and Jugram Haschwalth is his chief advisor. Additionally, he is also Yhwach’s substitute when the latter is asleep. Another interesting thing about the Wandenreich in Bleach: Thousand Year Blood-War is that they salute each other by raising their crosses. This organization consists of Quincy, willing Arrancar, and some Arrancar who were drafted forcefully.
Additionally, members of the Wandenreich were assigned to various sections of the empire based on their skills and powers. The Sterritter are some of the strongest Quincy and within the Sternritter exists the Schutzstaffel.
These are the most powerful Quincy in the empire and are Yhwach’s personal guards. The Silburn located in Lichtreich served as the headquarters. The Reishi particles make up the headquarters of the Wandenreich. Furthermore, the headquarters is hidden in a different dimension.
Notable Members of the Wandenreich
Yhwach is the emperor of the Wandenreich. He is the most powerful in his empire and the progenitor of all Quincy. Prominent members of the Wandenreich are assigned an alphabet and a corresponding epithet. Uryu Ishida is the crown prince and Yhwach chose him as his successor. Yhwach assigned Uryu Ishida the alphabet “A” and the epithet “Antithesis”. Jugram Haschwalth is the Sternritter Grandmaster who has the alphabet “B” and the epithet “Balance” assigned to him.
Lille Barro is the leader of the Schutzstaffel and Yhwach assigned the alphabet “X” and the epithet “The X-Axis”. Pernida, Askin, and Gerard Valkyrie are the remaining members of the Schutzstaffel. They were assigned “C – The Compulsory”, “D – Deathdealing”, and “M – Miracle” respectively. Hubert was the Vice-Captain of the Sternritter whose alphabet and epithet are unknown.
Last but not least, Quilge is the Executive Hunting Captain, and Yhwach is assigned “J – the Jail”. Asguiaro and Luders were two of the most popular Arrancar soldiers in the anime and manga series. Among the other members of the Wandenreich with the Scrift, Gremmy Thoumeaux, and Giselle Gewelle are quite popular.
What Is Sternritter in Bleach: Thousand Year Blood-War
The Sternitter was a part of the Wandenreich, comprised of the most powerful Quincy. The Sternritter’s main job was to purge all Shinigami. Additionally, Yhwach bestowed a Schrift to all members of the Sternritter. The Schrift is a holy alphabet that awakens certain abilities. There are a total of 28 Sternritter members. There are 26 known Schrifts and 2 unknown Schrifts in the animanga series. Pernida and Gerard’s Schrifts are honorary. Additionally, Yhwach didn’t bestow them with the Schrifts. These two characters had pre-existing Soul King abilities. This is why their Schrifts are honorary.
What Is the Schutzstaffel in Bleach: Thousand Year Blood-War?
The Schutzstaffel are members of the Sternritter who are Yhwach’s personal guards. They are exceptionally strong and happen to be some of the best combatants in the Wandenreich. Barring Jugram Haschwalth, they are the most powerful in the Sternritter. As mentioned earlier, Lille Barro was the first one to receive a Schrift from Yhwach. He became the leader of the Schutzstaffel and played an important role in the Bleach: Thousand Year Blood War.
Including Lille Barro, there are five members of the Schutzstaffel. Uryu Ishida with Antithesis, Gerard Valkyrie with Miracle, Pernida Parnkgjas with the Compulsory, Askin Nakk le Vaar with the Deathdealing, and Lille Barro with the X-Axis. Furthermore, Yhwach considered the Schutzstaffel expendable. He used his Auschwahlen for the third time to absorb Gerard Valkyrie.

The Wandenreich is a powerful empire led by Yhwach, a literal God. That being said, Yhwach’s defeat shocked the fanbase. However, they have provided fans with some of the most entertaining moments with characters like Uryu Ishida and Lille Barro.
