A queen bee thrown into supernatural and cosmic chaos, Aira Shiratori has become a hilarious addition to the booming anime, Dandadan. She is the typical popular high school girl who is kind to everyone, including the nerdy Okarun. Or so you thought. Not long after her first meeting with Okarun, it was revealed that she was actually a mean girl obsessed with her beauty.

Her life changed when she got involved with Okarun and Momo. Especially when she discovered a spherical golden object seemingly brimming with divine power. Unbeknownst to her, it’s one of Okarun’s, well, precious treasures. With her newfound divine ball, Aira thought she was a chosen one. Now that’s a main protagonist energy. But who is she exactly? Does her overconfidence turn out to be true? Let’s find out.

Aira is one of the main protagonists in Dandadan. Although she started on the wrong foot with Okaruna and Momo, their dynamics slowly built up. Dandadan now has quite the roster of personalities. First, it got Okarun’s nerdy but kindhearted soul, and then it also has Momo’s brash and forward attitude. And now, Aira’s character adds, not just comedy, but also a chaotic love triangle into the picture. Her role became more important once it was revealed that she had a high affinity with the unseen world.

Her encounter with wandering spirits actually started in her childhood. When she was a child, she mistook a ghost for her deceased mother. Ever since then, the ghost had been following her even to her teenage days. However, that ghost’s identity was revealed as a dangerous yokai, Acrobatic Silky.

Aira first came into the story in episode 5 of the Dandadan anime. She stepped in just when there was a little bit of romance development between Momo and Okarun. However, Momo was quick to catch on that Aira was just talking to Okarun to feed her own ego. And so, Momo had a bucket fall right on top of her head.

However, what Aira saw wasn’t just an unfortunate accident. She noticed Momo’s supernatural hands. Possibly, Okarun’s golden ball that she had picked up opened the door for her affinity to the other world. Unfortunately, this impression gave her the wrong message. Aira was convinced Momo was a demon and had Okarun as a hostage. And thus, the mystical adventure of Aira Shiratori in Dandadan began.

Interestingly enough, Aira became infatuated with Okarun because of a series of misunderstandings. She went from just wanting to make fun of Okarun, thinking he was a demon, to thinking he was a romantic interest. Okarun and Momo’s romantic development is building up in every episode. However, with Aira coming into the picture, there’s a chaos factor to consider.

Aira’s Shiratori’s Power, Explained

If you have watched the seventh episode of Dandadan, then you know what Aira Shiratori in Dandadan was capable of. At this point, Aira had awakened her power, derived from the yokai, Acrobatic Silky. It began after Aira and the duo’s confrontation. Convinced that Momo was a demon, she tried to exorcise her with the help of her other friends.

But it was just the time when Acrobatic Silky finally showed herself. The yokai was a tall, imposing woman wearing a red dress. Although one might think she had a heavy and lumbering body. She’s surprisingly flexible and would catch up to anyone she’s chasing. Now, what’s the deal between her and Aira?

Acrobatic Silky attacked Momo just when Aira confronted her. This yokai was the one following her ever since her childhood. However, Okarun arrived at the scene and was just in time to help Momo take down the yokai. However, Aira got injured and was unconscious because of this debacle.

Seeing the girl she had followed for years hurt, Acrobatic Silky volunteered her aura to save Aira. Despite Momo and Okarun’s doubt, the two eventually relent and let her get close to Aira. As a result, she got Acrobatic Silky’s power.

Acrobatic Silky’s power let her transform into a similar alter ego to Okarun’s. In this form, her hair acted as a weapon and extended her reach. The hair could act as if it’s a set of tentacles, capturing and flinging items to Aira’s opponents. Not to mention, it could also act like extra limbs to cling to objects. It became essential when the gang was surrounded yet again by the Serpoian aliens. Other than that, just like Okarun and Turbo Granny, Aira’s physical prowess surged to another level.

At first, it seems a bit odd why Acrobatic Silky went after Aira. Aira only came to her supernatural senses after finding Okarun’s golden ball. So, there had been no way for her to know that Acrobatic Silky was around. The real reason is explained in the seventh episode.

When she was little, Aira mistook Acrobatic Silky as her deceased mother. But, at that point, Acrobatic Silky was already a wandering ghost. When she was alive, she had to support her daughter alone because her husband was nowhere to be seen. Unfortunately, she was drowning in debt. So, she took on multiple jobs, even to the point where she had to offer sexual services.

One day, she decided to buy a new dress for her daughter, a red dress much like what she wore as a yokai. But, when she got home, the men she owed money to were already there. Unable to pay for everything, she got beaten up, and her daughter was taken away.

After her desperate attempt to chase those men, she succumbed to her injury and realized she would never see her daughter again. Overwhelmed and burdened with grief, she then decided to jump off a building. Sometime after that, Acrobatic Silky met little Aira. This is when her obsession to protect Aira began, and that was what caused her to turn into a yokai.

Conclusion

Her addition to the story makes the hilarity of the anime even more impactful. Aira Shiratori in Dandadan might come off as arrogant at first. But her own concept of being the chosen one often has its own comedic value. Not to mention, with Aira now able to transform just like Okarun, the power system in Dandadan becomes clearer.
