Chizuru Honsho is a student at Karakura High School, distinguished by her short red hair and red-framed glasses. She is part of Orihime’s primary friend group, along with Tatsuki. Chizuru is an energetic girl who often seems happy as she dons a smile on her face constantly.
The cause of her cheerfulness, however, comes from a dishonest source. This is Chizuru’s obsession with girls, particularly Orihime. She can be seen constantly ogling at others, making inappropriate jokes, and even trying to make physical contact with Orihime.
At the same time, she also cares about her friends and gets defensive if anyone attempts to badmouth them. Her possessiveness and light-hearted personality can also rapidly turn to fearfulness when she recognizes danger. This ultimately made up part of her divisive role in the series.
Chizuru Honsho’s Abilities
Unlike most other humans in the series who gain some form of supernatural power, Chizuru Honsho is just an ordinary person. She is unaware of the spiritual battles taking place around her, and her exaggerated reactions and feelings of confusion make up her character arc.
At the same time, she is shown to have special skills in the filler episodes of Bleach. Possessing a Karakura-Raizer Suit, this piece of equipment plays to Chizuru’s strengths. Chizuru Honsho plays a supporting role in Bleach and is present for several key moments early in the series. Apart from her daily advances on Orihime, she faced her first threat when attacked by the Hollow Numb Chandelier. The creature’s seed took control of Chizuru and forced her to attack Orihime.
While Tatsuki intervened to protect her, she, too ended up falling to the enemy. When faced with defeat, Orihime pushed herself to evolve and revealed her Shun Shun Rikka for the first time. Soon after, she defeated Numb Chandelier.
Chizuru’s main role came in the Fake Karakura Town Arc. During Aizen’s attack, Chizuru fell into complete despair because she couldn’t understand the situation. Although Keigo, Tatsuki, Afro-san, and the others tried to protect her, their calmness and secrecy only made her panic more.
Finally, after Aizen killed Gin and confronted Chizuru and her group, Ichigo returned. He had noticeably changed and attacked the antagonist, carrying him to a more isolated location for their battle. This was the last mention of Chizuru Honsho in both the Bleach anime and manga.
The Controversy Surrounding Chizuru Honsho in Bleach
There are two main controversies in relation to Chizuru’s character. The first is her abrupt exclusion from the storyline with no indication of her final fate. There are theories that she was mentally strained due to Aizen’s attack and left Karakura Town. Most also believe that Kubo simply forgot about her due to the various events occurring in Bleach.
This was disheartening for fans charmed by Chizuru. Her personality was different from the other cast members, and she was present during key moments of growth for both Ichigo and Orihime. Chizuru also depicts the struggles of a common human in a world dominated by the supernatural. This was a much-needed perspective Bleach didn’t always cover.
However, not every fan appreciates Chizuru. This is the source of her second controversy, which is mainly that she is too perverted. Chizuru is a proud lesbian and could have been a much-needed banner of representation in anime and manga.
Unfortunately, Bleach simply displayed her attraction to women as a gag. Chizuru’s feelings were never explored and always came in the form of her improper actions toward Orihime. This trivialized a possible revolutionary moment of inclusion in a mainstream shonen series.
