Who is Doma in Demon Slayer? Taking a look at the Upper Moon 2 demon who has a connection to Inosuke and Shinobu in the manga.
As the name suggests, the Demon Slayer series is set in a world where demons run rampant. Humanity fights back with the help of skilled demon hunters who risk their lives on the battlefield. There are a number of phenomenal antagonists in the series, and fans empathize with some of them since they are victims of circumstances. However, there are a few on the opposite end of the spectrum. One such character is Doma. Those who haven’t read the manga might not know much about him.
This is because he hasn’t received as much screen time as some of the other demons in this series. Some anime-only fans seem to have one question in mind—who is Doma in Demon Slayer? Doma is the Upper Moon 2 demon in the manga series. He is one of the most powerful demons who was responsible for Kanae Kocho’s death. He also killed Inosuke Hashibira’s mother.
Those who have read the manga detest him with every fiber of their being. His personality is wicked, and there aren’t any redeeming qualities. Much like Muzan, he managed to rally all viewers behind the demon hunters and make them root for humanity. He is a vile character with sadistic tendencies.
Doma’s Backstory in Demon Slayer
Before he became a demon, he was born with rainbow-colored eyes. His parents were part of a cult, and they made him the leader. They believed that he could communicate with the Gods. He is also apathetic as he could never understand human emotions. Since Doma was the leader of a cult, people would go to him with their problems. However, he couldn’t really help them since the concept of Paradise and happiness eluded him.
Doma always looked down on people and hated how they behaved. His mother stabbed her husband for having affairs with other women. Following his death, she ingested poison and ended up taking her own life as well. Despite seeing his parents die right before his eyes, he felt nothing. He only reacted to the blood and the smell of the rotting carcass. He was annoyed by the mess and the smell and not really sad about the loss of his parents.
Twenty years into the future, he met Muzan, and he became a demon. Furthermore, he was convinced that he needed to help people reach Paradise. However, Doma wasn’t wired like the way others were. He thought that the only way to lead the people to Paradise was by devouring them.
Doma’s Abilities in Demon Slayer
Doma has some of the best regenerative abilities in the manga. Since he was the Upper Moon 2 demon, he had some of the most potent Blood Demon Art abilities. He could manipulate ice. This was quite versatile since he could release minute ice particles that could kill humans if ingested. He was so powerful that Hashira sacrificed her life. Shinobu is known for her speed, but none of her attacks inflicted any amount of damage.

With his Blood Demon Art, he could create massive structures out of ice. These structures could also launch attacks. One of his most powerful moves involves the creation of a huge Bodhisattva statue. This statue can release a colossal gust of ice, which is exceptionally poisonous.
Doma also creates a myriad of razor-sharp ice pieces that can cut through human flesh. Not only does it cause damage, but it’s also coated in poison that will circulate through the body and kill the person almost immediately. Furthermore, due to his physical condition during fights, it’s nearly impossible to unlock the Demon Slayer Mark.
Doma’s Status in Demon Slayer
Doma took on Inosuke Hashibira, Kanao Tsuyuri, and Shinobu Kocho. The Flower Hashira was unable to land a single substantial attack. Things seemed quite bleak for the demon hunters. While Doma attacked the entire bunch, he did not show his true potential. He was toying around with the fighters. However, Shinobu banked on the fact that he would consume her. She willingly allowed Doma to devour her. It was later revealed that Shinobu had consumed small amounts of Wisteria poison for about a year.
She had about 37 kilograms of poison circulating in her body. Therefore, Doma became incredibly weak. Shinobu’s sacrifice was important because it allowed Kanao and Inosuke to deliver the final blow. The two demon hunters killed Doma once and for all. This was unachievable without Shinobu’s sacrifice. Doma’s death was quite satisfying. In the afterlife, he saw Shionobu. Additionally, it seemed like he was in love with Shinobu.
However, she detested him thoroughly and even asked him to never utter her name again. She held his severed head in the afterlife. This was a slightly unusual visual, but fans were happy to see one of the most powerful demons die in the manga series.
Doma’s Role in Demon Slayer
Doma takes on the role of a major antagonist. However, he stood above everyone else because of his personality. Most readers hated Doma because he had sadistic tendencies. He wanted to devour women and didn’t bat an eye when his parents died. The character writing was such that it unified all the readers against the demons. In that regard, Doma was a good antagonist. He was also a tool to deliver decent emotional content, given his connection with Inosuke’s mother. Inosuke managed to avenge his mother while Kanao avenged her sisters, who adopted and changed her life.

Doma was the Upper Moon 2 demon—who is connected to Inosuke, Kanao, and Shinobu. He took on the role of a major antagonist in the Infinity Castle arc of the manga series. However, he made a brief appearance at the end of the Swordsmith Village arc. He was ultimately killed by the combined efforts of Shinobu, Inosuke, and Kanao Tsuyuri.
