Every arc of One Piece introduces us to several new characters. In the Wano Arc, we get Oden, Kin’emon, and more. One such character is Momonosuke. His development through the battle against Kaido almost made fans root for him. So, who is Momonosuke in One Piece?

Momonosuke is the son of Kozuki Oden and the rightful heir to the shogunate in Wano. However, after Kaido and Orochi’s scheme, he was forced to flee and build his forces to come back stronger. Let us take a closer look at his character.

Who Is Momonosuke in One Piece?

Born to Oden and Toki, Momonosuke is the son of the family that once ruled over Wano. After his father’s death, he was sent forward in time along with his retainers to be kept safe. Hence, with the goal of liberating Wano, he and his remaining allies set out to search for supporters.

Despite his growth, Momonosuke still has the mindset of a young boy. He often shows immaturity and stubbornness. Nevertheless, he has carried on his father’s name. Due to this, even in the face of danger, Momonosuke refuses to let go of his samurai spirit.

While mostly burdened by his sense of duty, Momonosuke was able to let loose a bit around Luffy and his crew. He used his charms as a child to blatantly get Nami and Robin to pamper him.

Momonosuke’s introduction during the Punk Hazard Arc speaks volumes of Oda’s writing capability. This is testimony to how One Piece’s events feature some of the best build-up and foreshadowing in anime.

Much of Wano Arc is focused on Momonosuke’s development from a child of legacy to a leader in action. He recognized his lack of strength but kept moving forward for the sake of the people of Wano.

Upon reaching his home country again, Momonosuke swiftly moves into action and unites his allies. Despite his form as a little child, he inspires them and turns them against Kaido.

Even when he is captured and nearly executed by Kaido, Momonosuke never turns his back on his identity. With his ability to turn into a dragon, Momonosuke assists Luffy in his battle against Kaido and pulls Onigashima away from the flower capital.

His body aged up through Shinobu’s ability, but he mentally remained the same. However, his presence is more commanding, as he takes on the post of shogun after Kaido’s defeat.

Momonosuke’s Strengths and Abilities

In spite of his young age, Momonosuke has a lot of abilities and access to powerful individuals. He was one of the heads of the alliance that took down Kaido, equal to the likes of Luffy, Law, and Kid. He also had several loyal retainers from both the samurais and the Minks.

After becoming the shogun of Wano, Momonosuke has control over the entire country and all its resources and warriors. In addition, he can use the Voice of All Things. This is a rare ability that allows him to communicate with animals such as Zunesha.

Momonosuke can use Observation Haki, and observe in great detail the battle between Luffy and the antagonists. His Devil Fruit is an artificial version of Uo Uo no Mi, Model: Seiryu. This was initially considered a failure, but Momonosuke has learned to use it properly and generate abilities similar to Kaido.

He can transform into a dragon, fly with Flame Clouds, and also amplify his strength and speed. He even managed to replicate Kaido’s heat breath, a devastating attack that blasts from his mouth.

Momonosuke’s greatest strength comes from his resolve. He can rise above his fears for the sake of all those counting on him. His leadership and sense of responsibility keep growing as the series proceeds.

Momonosuke’s Relationship with Luffy

Momonosuke’s relationship with Luffy is one of the most meaningful dynamics in One Piece. While technically older than Luffy, he sees him as an elder brother figure and mentor.

During their first meeting, Momonosuke was captivated by Luffy’s strength and freedom. They kept clashing due to Luffy’s disregard for the young boy’s title, but this went to deepen their bond. Whenever Momonosuke wallows in self-doubt or pity, Luffy restores his faith and encourages him to take action.

He helps Momonosuke learn his dragon powers and assists him in landing a powerful blow to Kaido. The protagonist’s belief in the young child transforms him into the leader he is today. Momonsuke shares Luffy’s feelings as he constantly looks up to him for guidance and strength.

Together, the duo were able to free the people of Wano and form a lifelong friendship. At the end of the arc, Luffy promises to let Momonosuke into the Straw Hats should he ever become a pirate.

Conclusion

Kozuki Momonosuke is an underdog in One Piece who goes from a young child to the fearless leader of Wano. His journey and transformation make him one of the most compelling parts of the story. His part in the series might be over, but many fans are looking forward to Momonosuke making more appearances to help Luffy reach his goals.
