Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War has introduced several fascinating Quincies who fight against the Soul Reapers and Squad Zero. Among these, Pernida Parnkgjas is one of the most enigmatic figures who captivates the attention of fans. Wearing a white cloak and a face that’s never visible, fans often question who exactly Pernida is in Bleach.

Pernida is the left hand of the Soul King and part of Yhwach’s elite Quincy guard – the Schutzstaffel. Let us take a closer look at this.

Who Is Pernida in Bleach?

As mentioned above, Pernida is the Soul King’s left hand who ended up separating from Adnyeus due to the betrayal of the Noble Houses. The right hand of the Soul King – Mimihagi, took harbor inside Ukitake and helped him restore balance to Soul Society.

On the contrary, the left hand ended up serving the enemy Quincy King, Yhwach. Pernida has the Sternritter designation of “C – The Compulsory.” Despite Yhwach’s plan of overthrowing the original body of the Soul King, Pernida faithfully serves him.

For most of the series, Pernida speaks in an unclear manner that only the other Quincies can understand. However, after revealing its appearance to be a large left hand with chains attached, it gradually learns to speak properly. Through this, we learn that Pernida is a very cocky and proud character.

Why Is Pernida with the Quincies?

Now that we know Pernida was a part of the Soul King, the question remains of how it became a Quincy.

1000 years ago, right when Yhwach and his army’s powers were growing, Ichibe traveled to meet him and negotiate. As a precautionary measure, he had carried the Soul King’s left hand with him.

Unsurprisingly, their negotiations broke down due to conflicting purposes. Yhwach immediately used the Almighty, only to be countered by the left hand Ichibe had carried. When attempting to stop it with his Blut, the hand ended up possessing Yhwach. Ichibe then expressed that the Quincy King would be unable to use his Almighty until death.

However, after some time, Pernida became a sentient being with a personality of its own. Seemingly unaware of its identity as the left hand of Adnyeus, it was dedicated to Yhwach and joined his Sternritter.

It should be noted that Pernida and Gerard Valkyrie are the only Sternritters not given any powers by Yhwach. This is because Pernida was a deity himself, and Gerard represents the heart of the Soul King.

Pernida Strengths and Abilities

1) The Compulsory –

As Pernida’s most notable ability, The Compulsory allows it to control and manipulate the nervous systems of others. By shooting its nerves into the opponent, it can instantly crush and tear apart their body parts. This was seen as it twisted Yoruichi’s arm when she tried interfering with Yhwach.

2) Self-Manipulation –

Similar to how Pernida can control the bodies of others, it also has complete freedom over its own anatomy. Through this, it can easily regenerate and restore any appendage it loses. The most advantageous addition to this is that Pernida can create clones by removing its fingers. These copies have all of Pernida’s powers and are sentient on their own.

3) Evolution –

Pernida controls the domain of “Progress” as the left hand of the Soul King. Hence, by connecting itself to others, it can rapidly evolve both physically and mentally. As we see in the Thousand-Year Blood War Arc, Pernida learns to speak at a rapid pace and can completely understand and copy any of its opponent’s abilities.

4) Spiritual Power –

Being the left hand of the Soul King, it goes without saying that Pernida has immense spirit energy. It can also absorb reishi from the atmosphere to further strengthen itself.

Using this spirit energy, Pernida creates its special weapon – The Heilig Bogen. Taking the shape of a bow and arrow, it can cause massive destruction upon being fired.

Similarly its Quincy power – Vollstandig gives it two wings and allows it to fly at great speeds and adapt during battle. When released, it causes Pernid’s spiritual pressure to turn golden in color.

5) Precognitive Immunity –

The Soul King and all his parts are not affected by precognitive abilities such as the Almighty. This prevents Yhwach from seeing visions of their future and was the reason Ichibe carried the left hand during their meeting.

Who Defeats Pernida in Bleach?

Pernida’s endless adaptability makes it one of the strongest in Bleach but was also the cause of its downfall. The genius scientist and Captain of the 12th Division, Mayuri Kurotsuchi, was the one responsible for defeating the deity.

Soon after Pernida dealt crushing blows to Zaraki during their battle, Mayuri intervened and showed off his master plan. Using an unknown liquid on Pernida’s hidden form, Mayuri attacked its nerve tendrils while constantly calling it the left hand of the Soul King.

This greatly annoyed Pernida as it unveiled its real form and began rapidly attacking Mayuri. Right when the tides seemed to be shifting, the Shinigami showcased his modified Bankai – Konjiki Ashisogi Jizō: Makai Fukuin Shōtai. This caused an upgraded version of the terrifying Konjiki Ashisogi Jizō to devour Pernida and its clones. Made up of 70000 layers of nerves, Pernida would also not be able to take control of the Bankai.

Enraged, it escaped using its arrows and connected its nerves to them. As soon as its energy made contact with Mayuri, Pernida destroyed his arm and moved swiftly to kill him. Right then, Nemu interrupted them and saved her master.

However, when Pernida and its clones were fighting Nemu, they won and began eating her remains. At this point, Mayuri explained how he had control over Nemu’s brain and that her cells would uncontrollably multiply. By consuming her, Pernida and its clones would keep self-destructing by regenerating too much.

Hence, by using Pernida’s own adaptability skill against itself, Mayuri outsmarted it through his inventions and eventually took down the powerful figure.

Conclusion

Pernida is a mysterious and unsettling figure who greatly contributes to the suspense of the final Bleach arc. Despite being a fragment of the Soul King, it never considered itself to be one and followed the Quincies right to the end.

Its final battle with Mayuri is one of the most memorable fights in the series and only added to the lore and ingenuity of writing in Bleach.
