Who is Suigetsu in Boruto? Explore the character’s role in Naruto, powers and abilities as well as his significance in Boruto.
The Naruto universe features a rich and diverse cast of characters, each with their own traits and ambitions. Regardless of their screen time, they contribute uniquely to the series’ layered narrative, greatly expanding its lore. Suigetsu Hozuki is one such character who holds great relevance in Naruto and carries it on to the sequel, Boruto. While initially associated with Sasuke, his role as the series proceeds keeps varying. So, who is Suigetsu in Boruto?
In Boruto, Suigetsu is an assistant to Orochimaru’s experiments and continues sharing a relationship with Sasuke and his daughter, Sarada. Let us take a closer look at this.
Who Is Suigetsu in the Naruto Universe?
In the Naruto universe, Suigetsu is a shinobi from Kirigakure. Considered to be the second coming of the demon after Zabuza, he was captured and experimented on by Orochimaru for a long time. Following Sasuke’s infiltration, however, he ended up leaving and joining the deuteragonist’s new group, Hebi.
Suigetsu cares about very few things, but his passions demand his full attention. He loves killing, and his main goal is to collect the swords of the Seven Ninja Swordsmen of the Mist. Additionally, he has a mischievous side that enjoys leaving remarks on Sasuke’s serious demeanor and pulling pranks on Karin’s attempts to woo their leader.
Nevertheless, Suigetsu is courageous, and brash, and plays a huge role through his humor and presence on the battlefield. When the stakes are highest, Suigetsu can be surprisingly calm and analytical, best shown in his battle against Killer B. Hence, despite his morally ambiguous persona and position as Sasuke’s “sidekick,” he holds a special place in many fans’ hearts.
Suigetsu’s Strengths and Abilities
Suigetsu is a very proficient warrior, considered the reincarnation of Zabuza, and a prodigious murderer. His main ability is the Hozuki Clan’s Water Release, allowing him to shift between a solid and liquid form. Through his high degree of control, Suigetsu can shift the size of his limbs and negate any attacks without the need for hand signs.
Additionally, he can perfectly merge into existing water bodies, allowing him to hide and execute large-scale techniques. Suigetsu’s major offensive ability with his water abilities is compressed bullets he shoots with great force from his hands.
Since Suigetsu’s main goal is tied to collecting swords, he is unsurprisingly a great swordsman. His immense physical strength allows him to wield Zabuza’s heavy Kubikiribocho. By shifting the strength within his body, he can increase the force behind his attacks. Combining all these with his keen senses and experience makes him an underrated fighter in Naruto and Boruto.
Suigetsu’s Relationship With Sasuke
Suigetsu’s relationship with Sasuke is complex and continuously growing. He had initially joined him driven by self-interest, prioritizing his own dreams over his leader’s. However, as time passed, Suigetsu did come to respect Sasuke.
He actively helped him search for Itachi and later took part in Taka’s objective of avenging the tragic Uchiha. Suigetsu also put up a pretense of not killing people at Sasuke’s orders, though he never followed it properly.
This carries on to Boruto, where he assists Sarada in tracking her lineage and helps Sasuke himself search for Shin. Hence, Suigetsu’s relationship with Sasuke is a subtle yet recurring part of the Naruto universe.
Suigetsu’s Significance in Boruto
Similar to many Naruto characters who have been carried on to Boruto, Suigetsu has a background role that is important yet understated in this sequel. While there is no official name for his occupation, Suigetsu has continued staying with Orochimaru, helping with his experiments.
He was instrumental in Mitsuki’s creation, testing the boy’s instincts and skills as soon as he got a sense of self. One embarrassing slip-up of his came when he led Sarada to believe that Karin was her mother. By mixing up the DNA samples, he got heavy criticism from both Naruto and Karin for this action. This was soon cleared up, highlighting Sasuke’s loyalty to his wife.
He also plays a crucial role in freeing the kidnapped Jugo and giving closer insight into Orochimaru’s presence in Boruto. Hence, Suigetsu might still be a supporting character in the series, but he has played a significant role in the lives of the Uchihas, Orochimaru, and the other members of Taka.
While his contributions have been largely in anime-original episodes and not the main storyline of the source material, fans will be hoping he returns in Two Blue Vortex.
Conclusion
Suigetsu is a character who sticks out for the bond he shares with Sasuke as well as the strength of their connection that carries over to Boruto. Initially living in fear of Orochimaru’s experiments, he ends up working for the man himself, bringing scientific innovations to the series.
Despite having played important roles in several arcs, many fans believe that the full potential of this character is yet to be explored. As Boruto proceeds, they will be hoping for the series to bring some attention to this shinobi.
