The 2024 fall anime season was taken by storm with Dandadan’s debut back in October. This anime instantly attracted new and old anime fans alike. Its humorous yet action-packed first episodes made a sensational entrance.

The series immediately introduced an enigmatic yet memorable character, Turbo Granny. She is a modern Yokai who guarded an abandoned tunnel in Shono City. Her first appearance is both comedic and intense. However, who exactly is Turbo Granny in Dandadan? How is she related to the rest of the anime’s roster?

In the Dandadan universe, Yokai are spirits who steal life force energy from humans. They are malicious in nature and hostile toward anyone who comes close to them. These Yokai became the spiritual hazards that they are because of their unfinished business in the mortal world.

Much like other Yokai, Turbo Granny debuted in the story as a Yokai who guards an old tunnel in Shono City. She’s said to be a modern Yokai who emerged as a protector for young girls who become sexual assault victims. Turbo Granny got her catchy nickname from her ability to run up to 100 km/h or around 60 miles per hour. She took the form of an old woman with unkempt white hair. However, she could shapeshift into her true form of a terrifying giant lady with a creepy face.

Her first encounter with the protagonists occurred when Okarun and Momo wanted to prove to each other that spirits and aliens do in fact exist. However, they eventually found themselves in precarious situations. Turbo Granny relentlessly chased Okarun and devoured his private parts, while Momo found herself restrained by the aliens.

The now-possessed Okarun suddenly popped out from Momo’s phone. Imbued with Turbo Granny’s power, Okarun defeated most of the aliens while Momo finished them off with her awakened spiritual power. Turbo Granny was defeated by the protagonists with the help of Momo’s grandmother, Seiko. In the end, Seiko sealed her consciousness in a Maneki-neko cat doll. Turbo Granny then went on as an unwilling ally for the duo.

Turbo Granny’s Backstory

Although the moment when Okarun lost his private parts to Turbo Granny is treated as comedic relief, it serves as Turbo Granny’s essential backstory. Her defeat hints at the tragic tale related to Turbo Granny. Originally, she was a Yokai who resided in a tunnel that so happened to be a place where young girls often fell victim to malicious men.

Her sudden appearance on the alien’s ship also hints at her protective instinct toward young girls. Seiko revealed that Turbo Granny often consoled the spirits of young girls whose lives ended in upsetting ways.

When the alien was about to assault Momo, Turbo Granny unexpectedly emerged and smashed the aliens. She only went after males in particular, which is why Okarun wasn’t spared in their encounter.

Currently, Turbo Granny resides in a Maneki-neko cat doll. However, her power remains in Okarun’s body for unexplained reasons. This power, though useful in dire situations, came from Turbo Granny’s curse. When she first possessed Okarun, Turbo Granny held full control of his body.

The situation changed for the better when Momo discovered that she could suppress Turbo Granny within Okarun’s body. It became a spiritual tug-of-war between Momo and Turbo Granny until Seiko isolated the latter into a doll.

Initially, Okarun got this power when Turbo Granny stole his private parts and turned his family jewels into golden balls. In the anime, Okarun was able to recover one of his golden balls after their encounter with another Yokai, Acrobatic Silky.

The curse allows Okarun to borrow Turbo Granny’s ability to run at lightning speed and enhance his agility. However, the curse exhausts his body tremendously. To mitigate this, Seiko advised Okarun to train his physique so he could contain Turbo Granny’s power without falling to pieces.

Is Turbo Granny a Villain in Dandadan?

Although she debuted as a hostile Yokai in the anime, Turbo Granny is not a villain in Dandadan. Rather, she fits the definition of an anti-villain. An anti-villain is a character whose motives are benevolent, but they don’t care about how they accomplish their goals.

Turbo Granny’s overarching motivation is to protect girls from men with malicious intent. This alone is a noble cause and doesn’t imply a villainous end goal. However, Turbo Granny was indiscriminate and would target any man who stumbled into her vicinity.

Entering the Acrobatic Silky arc, she became a supporting character for Okarun and Momo. She seems to be content hanging around the duo and Seiko in her cat doll form. However, she still desires her power to be returned.

Turbo Granny and the Dandadan duo didn’t meet in a friendly way in the story. Their encounter was particularly distressing for Okarun, who got his parts stolen. However, Momo saved the day with her awakened supernatural power and was able to restrain Turbo Granny.

After Seiko’s ritual to separate Okarun and Turbo Granny’s consciousness, Turbo Granny was stuck within a doll. She initially professed her grudge against Momo for what she had done. However, they later agreed to compromise and searched for Okarun’s lost golden balls.

Conclusion

Turbo Granny is a supporting character in the Dandadan anime and manga. Her anti-villain tendency makes her character interesting and drives the plot, especially in Momo and Okarun’s encounter with Yokai. With her power stuck within Okarun, she has little option but to comply with Momo and Okarun in their search for Okarun’s remaining golden ball.

On the surface, their hijinks seem humorous. However, considering Turbo Granny’s true intention to regain her power, the duo must keep an eye on her.

Despite her terrifying nature as a Yokai, Turbo Granny has a compassionate and protective side toward victims of assault. It makes her character in Dandadan much more compelling and adds another layer to her nuance.
