Who is Yoru in Chainsaw Man? Here’s everything you need to know about the War Devil, her relationship with Asa Mitaka, and more.
Tatsuki Fujimoto’s Chainsaw Man series is renowned worldwide for its dark and gritty storytelling, which combines elements of horror, action, and existential dread. With Part 1 of the manga being a resounding success, Fujimoto took things to a whole new level in the ongoing Part 2.
One of the standout characters introduced at the very beginning of Chainsaw Man Part 2 is Yoru, aka the War Devil. Her introduction to the series marked a major shift in the narrative, intertwining her fate with Asa Mitaka, a high school girl grappling with her own inner demons. With that said, follow this article to learn more about Yoru’s character, her relationship with Asa Mitaka, her powers, and her significance in the overarching narrative.
Who Is Yoru in Chainsaw Man
Also known as the War Devil, Yoru is the villainous tritagonist of Chainsaw Man Part 2: Academy Saga. As the War Devil, she embodies humanity’s fear of war. She is also a member of the Four Horsemen and is currently occupying Asa Mitaka’s body as a Fiend after saving her from death.
Like other Devils, Yoru thrives on the fear her name invokes and seeks to increase her strength by instigating conflict and violence among others. She also harbors an unwavering grudge against Chainsaw Man (Denji), who left her in a near-death state following the battle between the Four Horsemen and the Weapon Devils.
After taking over Asa’s body, Yoru sets out to take revenge against her old enemy, Chainsaw Man (Denji), who happens to attend the same school as Asa. In order to complete her goal, Yoru forces Asa to look for a target to seduce and turn into a weapon.
Why Did Yoru Take Over Asa’s Body
Chainsaw Man Part 2: Academy Saga started off with Asa Mitaka as one of its central characters. She is a quiet and unsociable girl whose troubled past led her to develop a negative outlook on people, Devils, and the whole world. That said, her already miserable life took a turn for the worse when she died an unexpected death at the hands of the student council president of her school, who had obtained her powers after forming a contract with the Justice Devil.
As she lay dying, Asa saw the War Devil appear in front of her, who offered to resurrect her in exchange for forming a contract. After agreeing to form a contract, the War Devil took possession of Asa’s body, turning her into the War Fiend and eliminating the student council president effortlessly. Subsequently, Asa and Yoru started sharing the same body.
Yoru and Asa’s Relationship in Chainsaw Man
Yoru and Asa’s relationship began in the very first chapter of Chainsaw Man Part 2, where Yoru saved Asa’s life in exchange for forming a contract and becoming the War Fiend. Despite sharing the same body, their initial relationship was purely antagonistic rather than cooperative. Although Yoru did save Asa from dying, she did so simply to force Asa to help her in her goal of locating and killing Chainsaw Man.
What’s more, Yoru threatened to end Asa’s life should she disobey her or interfere with her plans. However, due to the fact that Asa never really valued her life in the first place, she often fought back and disobeyed Yoru at several points in the story.
Their relationship eventually transformed from a hostage situation to more of a partnership when Yoru realized that keeping Asa alive was absolutely necessary if she wanted to stand any chance of defeating Chainsaw Man. As such, Yoru loses the bargaining power to act on her threats to kill Asa, who, on the other hand, was more or less willing to go along with the War Devil’s plans. As the story went on, the two gradually became more accepting of each other’s presence, with both Asa and Yoru often relying on and even empathizing with each other.
Yoru’s Powers and Abilities
As the War Devil, Yoru possesses the unique ability to turn whatever she believes is hers into a weapon. It can range from a pencil and other objects to an entire human being. In the case of human beings, they can only be turned into a weapon if Yoru or Asa believes that the person has romantic feelings towards them. That said, this concept of believing something or someone to be “hers” depends entirely on both Asa and Yoru’s personal perceptions.
When in possession of Asa’s body, Yoru displays enhanced strength and agility as compared to her host. Apart from her ability to get more powerful by feeding on humanity’s fear of war, Yoru is effectively immortal and can technically go on living forever unless she gets killed, in which case she will be reincarnated in Hell. She is also capable of regenerating herself from grave injuries by drinking blood, even if she is beheaded. That said, it should be noted that Yoru once claimed that her Devil powers had severely weakened after having a major part of her body devoured by Pochita, the Chainsaw Devil.
Yoru’s Significance in Chainsaw Man
Yoru’s introduction and subsequent relationship with Asa Mitaka is one of the major focal points of Chainsaw Man Part 2. On a personal level, her relationship with Asa allows for a deeper exploration of the latter’s character. Through their interactions, Asa learns to confront her own fears and insecurities, which eventually leads to both characters undergoing major growth throughout the story.
That said, her character development does not take away from her role as a major antagonist of the Academy Saga. It was made painfully obvious at several points that, in spite of Yoru’s growing sympathy towards her vessel, she remains indifferent to taking human lives for her own means. It reminds readers that no matter how much Yoru shows growth in her behavior, at her core, she will always remain a Devil.
Conclusion
The War Devil Yoru is undoubtedly a complex and irreplaceable addition to the world of Chainsaw Man. Her presence offered readers a fresh perspective on the Devil-Human dynamic, with her relationship with Asa Mitaka serving as a stark contrast to Denji and Pochita. Moreover, her ambitions and recent clash against the Chainsaw Man showcased her true nature and made her an unforgettable part of the series.
