Ubisoft’s Marc-Alexis Côté, the Executive Producer for the Assassin’s Creed franchise, recently shared on social media that the release of Assassin’s Creed Shadows has been delayed to February 14, 2025. While fans are surprised by this sudden announcement, they are also wondering about the reason behind this decision.

On their official social media pages, Ubisoft explained that they need some more time to polish and refine the Assassin’s Creed Shadows experience. They further mentioned about making improvements to the key features of the game:

“..but we realize we need more time to polish and refine the experience, pushing further some of our key features.”

Assassin’s Creed Shadows Release Moved to 2025 Due to Strategic Changes

Assassin’s Creed Shadows was initially set to release on November 15, 2024. The postponement means that it will now be released in 2025, the same year as Ghost of Yotei, the sequel to Ghost of Tsushima is scheduled to be available. Both games feature a similar historical Japanese setting.

Assassin’s Creed Shadows, the 14th installment in the series, takes place in the world of feudal Japan. Players will take control of two main protagonists—a Shinobi named Naoe and a Samurai named Yasuke.

In Ubisoft’s recent trading update, the developer admitted that their recent project Star Wars Outlaws failed to meet their expectation in sales. They referred to the game’s performance as “softer than expected”. Many players also reported bugs and glitches during the early days.

Upon examining Star Wars Outlaws’ release and performance, Ubisoft has decided to take more time to make their biggest dream project better. They wish to fulfill their promises and ensure the best gameplay for both protagonists.

Assassin’s Creed Shadows will now launch on February 14, 2025.

Steam Release on Day One

Ubisoft announced that Assassin’s Creed Shadows will be available on a broad range of platforms at the time of launch. This includes PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series, as well as Windows PC via Steam. The developer is known to launch their games on Ubisoft Connect initially and then on Steam after several months, but Assassin’s Creed Shadows will get different treatment. The Steam launch on day one is likely to increase the potential initial sales.

Cancelation of Season Pass Model

Another change in the strategy is the dropping of the traditional Season Pass model. Assassin’s Creed Shadows announced a Gold Edition and an Ultimate Edition, which cost around $110 and $130, respectively. These would allow players to access the Season Pass. Fans strongly opposed this system as they were unwilling to pay double the money for content that wasn’t available yet.

After the backlash, Ubisoft has backtracked. They also announced refunds for previous pre-orders and a free first expansion for future pre-orders.
