Attack on Titan is a groundbreaking anime series known for its mind-bending twists, intense storyline, and complex characters.

Created by Hajime Isayama, the series ran from April 7, 2013, to November 5, 2023. With 87 episodes and 2 special episodes, fans may wish to identify and navigate through any filler content.

To help deal with this, we have prepared a list of all the filler episodes in the Attack on Titan anime.

Complete Attack on Titan Filler List

A filler episode refers to any episode that does not adapt directly from the manga source material or advance the plot in any manner. These are unrelated to the main storyline and created for the sole purpose of “taking up time.”

A filler episode is generally made when the anime has caught up to its source and allows more chapters of the manga to be released.

There are no complete filler episodes in Attack on Titan, and the anime strictly follows the manga content. This is a rare instance, especially since the series switched hands from Studio WIT to Studio MAPPA.

However, there are a few episodes that contain a mix of canon and filler content:

  • Episode 22
  • Episode 33
  • Episodes 38-41

Along with these episodes, there are also several OVA episodes that were not written by Hajime Isayama. These include:

Attack on Titan OAD – Episodes 1-3:

  • Ilse’s Notebook: Notes from a Scout Regiment Member
  • A Sudden Visitor: The Torturous Curse of Adolescence
  • Distress

Attack on Titan: No Regrets – Episodes 1-2:

  • A Choice with No Regrets: Part One
  • A Choice with No Regrets: Part Two

While not being created by Hajime Isayama, No Regrets was referenced by him in the main series.

Attack on Titan: Lost Girls – Episodes 1-3:

  • Wall Sina, Goodbye: Part One
  • Wall Sina, Goodbye: Part Two
  • Lost in the Cruel World

Let us dive into the canonicity of these OVA episodes.

Are Attack on Titan OVAs Fillers?

Since filler episodes are generally not made by the original creator or referenced in the main storyline, most Attack on Titan OVAs can be classified as fillers.

However, among the various filler episodes found in anime, the Attack on Titan OVAs are also one of the most consistent with the themes and lore of the primary series.

Attack on Titan OAD featured intriguing characters such as Ilse, while Lost Girls showed us different sides of characters like Annie and Mikasa.

Attack on Titan: No Regrets, on the other hand, is a different case. This often sparks debate among the fandom regarding its canonicity due to the high quality of storytelling. It gave us a closer look into the backstory of Levi and showed the relationship between him and Erwin.

Despite not involving Isayama during its creation, it was referenced by him in Chapter 76 of the Attack on Titan manga as a flashback sequence. Hence, due to its origins as filler but the eventual role played in the main storyline, it is harder to classify it as completely filler or completely canon.

Thus, while most Attack on Titan OVAs can technically be classified as filler episodes—since the main series remains complete and understandable without them—they push the boundaries of the traditional definition of filler.

Should I Watch the Filler?

As noted above, the Attack on Titan filler episodes stand out from the typical fillers found in most anime. While they are not necessary to watch, their events may make you see the show and certain characters in another light.

The filler episodes can add emotional depth to the plot and also provide additional information on Titans. By focusing on these character-driven stories, they give fans a more holistic understanding of the cast in Attack on Titan.

Therefore, if you enjoy the main storyline of the series and wish to dive deeper into its world, we highly recommend watching the filler episodes.

Where To Watch and Read Attack on Titan

Attack on Titan can be watched on streaming services such as Crunchyroll and Hulu. The manga is available to purchase and read digitally on the Kodansha website.

Conclusion

Attack on Titan is beloved by fans for its gripping story and a tightly woven plot that avoids fillers to focus on the exhilarating main storyline. Even the filler episodes that are part of OVA side stories are in tune with the atmosphere of the primary source.

Hence, this greatly proves why the series receives rave reviews from viewers while keeping them engaged from start to finish.
