Gengar is the main attacker of this deck, using its move Hypnoblast to deal 70 damage and cause opponents to fall asleep. While issues were setting this Stage 2 card up before, thanks to the Rare Candy item, it isn’t as much of a deal now. Tapu Lele is an amazing partner to Gengar, dealing massive damage to any Pokemon setting up on the Bench by attaching Energy.

Ideal Starting Hand

You will want both Gastly on your playing field on the first turn. Additionally, having a Gengar and a Rare Candy in your hand all but guarantees that you can activate your strategy from the next turn onward.

Best Gengar Deck in Pokemon TCG Pocket: Strategy

The strategy of this deck is as follows:

  • Gengar attacks from the Active Spot and keeps your opponent’s Pokemon from doing anything as a result of it staying asleep. Even if it wakes up, its HP stat of 140 should let it survive most hits. Use Lillie and Giant Cape to ensure that its HP doesn’t drop too low.
  • Tapu Lele works well with Gengar for several reasons. It has a different weakness (Metal as opposed to Darkness), letting it come in on double-damaging Darkness moves that Gengar cannot handle. Additionally, it checks Darkrai ex and Giratina ex handily with its move Energy Arrow. This move does 20 damage for each Energy attached to a Pokemon for a single Psychic Energy.
  • Oricorio Sensu is a great card to have on the Bench as it can act as a revenge killer, dealing 80 damage if a card on your side of the field is KO’d

The biggest issue this deck faces is its relatively low damage output. So decks that get lucky coinflips with Sleep might just be able to outmuscle this deck.

Best Matchups

Giratina ex and Darkrai ex struggle with this deck, as attaching too much Energy will power up Tapu Lele’s Energy Arrow. Fighting-type decks like Rampardos/Lycanroc also take double damage from Gengar’s Hypnoblast.

Counters to This Gengar Deck in Pokemon TCG Pocket

Powerful Steel and Dark type decks with high HP stats like Solgaleo ex and Guzzlord ex can cause trouble for this deck.

Best Gengar Deck in Pokemon TCG Pocket: Tips and Tricks

Some things to remember while using this deck.

  • Use Cyrus to bring in Pokemon already damaged from Tapu Lele’s Energy Arrow which have retreated to the Bench.
  • Mars is a great way to flip the tables on your opponent if they have more points than you.
  • Additionally, as this deck does not rely on any Pokemon ex, you have a bit more leeway if you are forced to sacrifice a Pokemon so that Oricorio can get a quick kill.
