Guardian is one of the best Nightfarers to pick in Elden Ring Nightreign if you prefer a more defensive playstyle. While Guardian doesn’t have good damage compared to other “tank” classes, i.e., Wylder and Raider, it comes equipped with robust defensive options. Primarily, Guardian is meant to be the first line of defense in any party, tanking enemy hits and aggression, while allies dish out damage.

However, if used correctly, Guardian can dish out impressive amounts of damage. Furthermore, due to Guardian’s inherent defensive stance, it can easily tank enemy hits and counter them almost immediately via guard counters. However, to make good use of the Nightfarer, you need to have an optimized Relic loadout. Here’s a comprehensive guide on how to create the best Guardian build in Elden Ring Nightreign, including details on the Relics, attributes, and more.

Guardian is a hybrid class that excels at both Strength and Dexterity, akin to Wylder. However, the biggest advantage Guardian has over any other Nightfarer is in terms of its Vigor. By default, Guardian has the highest HP out of all the Nightfarers in Elden Ring Nightreign. The additional HP is essentially to support the character’s defensive playstyle.

Since the Guardian is meant to stay close to the boss/enemy at all times, having extra HP helps a lot. Furthermore, while Guardian can block all physical damage with his shield, he cannot do the same for affinity attacks. Elemental affinities will damage the Guardian even in the defensive stance, and that’s where having extra HP helps a lot.

In addition to that, Guardian is the only Nightfarer that has the ability to charge guard counters. After initiating a guard counter, if you hold R2/RT, you can charge the counterattack for more damage. Charged guard counters deal additional poise damage as well, making it synergize really well with stance-breaking passive perks. While you can use Colossal Weapons with the Guardian, it’s best to stick with Halberds to take full advantage of the guard counter mechanic. Additionally, Guardian benefits a ton from thrusting counter-passives.

How To Use the Best Guardian Build

Here are some tips to help you use the best Guardian build efficiently:

  • The Guardian build is based on two key aspects of the Nightfarer’s playstyle: guard counters and Ultimate Arts. Make sure to use both of these tools efficiently and not spam them as soon as they are available. You can guard counter most attacks, but only do so when the boss/enemy is within your weapon’s range. Similarly, use the Ultimate Art not only to deal damage to enemies but also to revive allies.

  • While you do have a ton of Vigor in this build, the Guardian isn’t invincible. Make sure to space yourself out properly and not jump headfirst into bosses. Instead, you want to retain a defensive stance as much as possible while trying to keep bosses distracted. The best way to do this is by holding block and using the Halberd/Spear’s poking attacks to apply elemental debuffs on bosses while also distracting them.

  • With Guardian, most of your damage isn’t going to come from your attacks. Instead, the damage is going to be dealt primarily by your allies. Instead, your role will be to tank enemy attacks and occasionally, rescue allies when they’ve fallen or are low on HP. While you can solo Nightlords using Guardian, it’s not a class built for that.

  • Do note that you can charge your Ultimate Art while activating it. Keep holding the Ultimate Art command when you activate it, and that will force the Guardian into a defensive stance with increased poise. During the charged Ultimate Art, both Guardian and your allies get additional poise and i-frames, which is quite helpful against certain bosses.

Additional Notes

The Guardian is most effective in these Expeditions: Tricephalos, Gaping Jaw, Equilibrious Beast, Darkdrift Knight, Fissure in the Fog, and Night Aspect.
