5) Rayman Legends

Rayman Legends is the last 2D platformer game in the franchise that was released on consoles, and it is a treat to play through this one. The levels are so beautifully designed, and the art style is really vivid, which makes the colors pop. Then comes the gameplay, which is nothing but full of fluid platforming mechanics.

The controls are so responsive, and the game is not even that punishing. The music levels are where Rayman Legends peaks. The platforming is synced in rhythm with the song that is playing, and you will always look forward to these levels at the end of each world in the game.

4) Hollow Knight

Hollow Knight is a Metroidvania at its core, but platforming has a huge impact on its gameplay design. So much so that not only are the levels filled with platforming sections, but also the boss fights. It’s amazing how the developers managed to create such complex platforming levels by using the Nail weapon.

This game also features one of the hardest platforming levels, known as the Path of Pain. Yes, the level definitely lives up to its name. Some of the hardest boss fights in the game also become a challenge due to platforming. Once you learn the mechanics of Hollow Knight, even challenging platforming can become fun. It all comes down to utilizing the tools that the game provides.

3) Celeste

This is another indie title that is considered to be a platforming masterpiece in certain gaming communities. Celeste was even nominated for the Game of the Year award, and it was a deserved nomination. The game itself starts off with simple mechanics, and it gets harder as you progress.

Celeste is not unfair, though, and you will realize that once you play through it. You’re going to die a lot of times in some of the levels, but you’re never going to blame that death on the game. And if you’re looking for an even bigger platforming challenge, then Celeste has harder levels that you can attempt after the main story.

2) Super Mario Odyssey

A list of great platforming games is not complete if it does not include a Mario title. And what better game to take that place than Super Mario Odyssey? It is undoubtedly one of the best 3D Mario games and platformers. Odyssey learns from the best parts of the original 3D Mario games, like Mario 64 and Sunshine, and creates a truly marvelous experience.

The levels are so vast and filled with platforming sections. There is so much that you can explore and do in this game. Even the boss fights are well-designed, and the amazing music is just the cherry on top.

1) Astro Bot

Astro Bot is the recent Game of the Year winner, and it comes from a pretty small studio called Team Asobi. It’s a first-party PS5 title that pays homage to not only the entire PlayStation history but also to certain specific studios and games. The game takes a lot of inspiration from the gameplay of 3D Mario titles, and it vastly expands upon that.

The platforming is made fun with the addition of these cool and quirky gadgets, and there are big levels surrounding these mechanics. There’s this one level where you can slow down time for platforming. Then there’s another where you can decrease in size to completely change how the game plays. You’ll never get bored with the platforming gameplay here because there’s just too much stuff to mess around with. Oh, and the boss fights are some of the best that you’ll find in a platforming game.
