Enhance your Great Sword by equipping these 5 best skills to the weapon in Monster Hunter Wilds and slay beasts with full strength.

Great Swords are one of the most effective weapons in Monster Hunter Wilds. They are also some of the most commonly selected weapons for amateur and experienced hunters alike. However, it’s not just the basic stats that make a weapon useful. Players should also focus on the skills that they assign to their gear pieces. Each weapon can hold many skills, but since we are talking about the Great Sword, let’s get to the 5 best skills for it.
Best MHW Skills for the Great Sword
There are many contestants for this “best skills” list. However, we could only pick five to keep things precise for all the players. Kindly note that the list will be subjective to the writer’s opinions, experiences, and play style. The following skills are the best in almost all scenarios for a Great Sword user:
- Quick Sheathe
- Weakness Exploit
- Stun Resistance
- Defense Boost
- Partbreaker

1. Quick Sheathe

Speed up your weapon sheathing and allow for a smoother combat flow with the help of Quick Sheathe. This is exceptionally helpful when tackling faster opponents, allowing players to quickly get in and out of combat depending on the circumstances. The skill has three levels that go as follows:
- Level 1 – Slightly increases sheathing speed.
- Level 2 – Increase sheathing speed.
- Level 3 – Greatly increases sheathing speed.
2. Weakness Exploit

Another great skill to use for a Great Sword, or any other weapon in your inventory, is Weakness Exploit. As the name suggests, it will increase the affinity of attacks that exploit a monster’s weak points and wounds. You must know by now that weak points and wounds can help you deal a burst of damage to a monster in a short span of time. In total, there are five levels for this skill, each adding something unique:
- Level 1 – Weak point hits gain +5% affinity, with an extra 3% on wounds.
- Level 2 – Weak point hits gain +10% affinity, with an extra 5% on wounds.
- Level 3 – Weak point hits gain +15% affinity, with an extra 10% on wounds.
- Level 4 – Weak point hits gain +20% affinity, with an extra 15% on wounds.
- Level 5 – Weak point hits gain +30% affinity, with an extra 20% on wounds.
3. Stun Resistance

It already appears to be a nearly impossible task for a Monster Hunter to take down a beast that looks like something out of a fantasy book. So, to give the monsters a chance against all the hunters, the developers added the “stun” feature. Despite its attempt at making the fight a bit more “fair,” the Stun can be pretty annoying to deal with. So, if you are like me, you will benefit from this Stun Resistance skill equipped. It has a total of three levels that go as follows:
- Level 1 – Reduces the duration of stun by 30%.
- Level 2 – Reduces the duration of stun by 60%.
- Level 3 – Prevents stun.
4. Defense Boost

There are different types of players in Monster Hunter Wilds. Each one has their own play style. A common play style is staying agile at all times during the battle. However, whether or not you like taking those hard hits from a monster several times your size, you will end up getting hit in most fights. So, to ensure that you come out victorious regardless of your injuries, it is important to pack health-replenishing supplies and a good armor.
To increase your confidence in your defense stats, we suggest that you equip a Defense Boost skill as well. It has seven levels that go as follows:
- Level 1 – Defense +5
- Level 2 – Defense +10
- Level 3 – Defense +5%, Bonus +10
- Level 4 – Defense +5%, Bonus +20, All elemental resistances +3
- Level 5 – Defense +8%, Bonus +20, All elemental resistances +3
- Level 6 – Defense +5%, Bonus +35, All elemental resistances +5
- Level 7 – Defense +10%, Bonus +35, All elemental resistances +5
5. Partbreaker

Those who are into precision and exploiting breakable body parts of a monster should not skip on the Partbreaker skill for their Great Sword. While breaking a part may not be the easiest way to go about a fight, it will be much more convenient to pursue your dream of precise attacks if you have this skill equipped. It will also increase the damage dealt when destroying a wound with a Focus Strike. The skill in question has three levels that go as follows:
- Level 1 – Increases part damage and 10% damage increase when conditions are met.
- Level 2 – Increases part damage and 20% damage increase when conditions are met.
- Level 3 – Increases part damage and 30% damage increase when conditions are met.
