The year has been stacked for gaming, and the same is true for turn-based games. In addition to the obvious big titles, the genre also saw several sleeper hits across the year. In this list, we shall discuss all of those and go over the six best turn-based games that were released in 2024.
1) Metaphor ReFantazio
Developed by Atlus, the creators of Persona, Metaphor ReFantazio was the talk of the gaming world, being nominated for several GOTY titles and winning Best RPG at the Game Awards 2024. The game flaunts its Persona DNA proudly, taking the best of the series’ turn-based combat and throwing it into a medieval European setting backed by a banger soundtrack. This is one of Atlus’ very best.
2) Like A Dragon Infinite Wealth
The eighth mainline game in the Yakuza/Like A Dragon saga, Like A Dragon Infinite Wealth follows Ichiban’s story as it heads into Hawaii. A thrilling crime drama with emotional stakes and unabashedly crass yet wholesome humor, Infinite Wealth has it all. The game’s turn-based combat features several classes and characters with varying abilities. The game also features a massive map filled with content, so this is one you’ll be sinking hours into.
3) Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake
The Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake brings a classic straight to modern hardware. The game works with the structure of the original and, as a result, flaunts a solid fundamental base of a turn-based gameplay experience. The game also features crisp and gorgeous visuals and art style, a memorable soundtrack, and an amusing cast of characters. Whether you have played the original or not, this is one you can’t miss.
4) The Thaumaturge
The Thaumaturge is one of the sleeper hits we were referring to earlier. The game features a gorgeous Victorian-era setting, backed and fully utilized by its excellent writing. The Thaumaturge’s turn-based gameplay is the icing on the cake, featuring several strategic combat possibilities and outcomes. You will routinely be up against both the natural and the supernatural and will be aided by tamed spirits. The game’s combat is unique, visually pleasing, and rewards strategic play.
5) Persona 3 Reload
The second Atlus game on this list, Persona 3 Reload, is the remake of the iconic Persona 3 game released back in 2006. The game follows the same narrative beats as the original but spices up the original’s gameplay by adding in a few new mechanics, such as the Baton Pass mechanic, first seen in Persona 5. The game feels truly modern and is the definitive way to experience the greatness that is Persona 3.
6) Metal Slug Tactics
The final entry on this list is Metal Slug Tactics. Metal Slug Tactics sees the action-focused Metal Slug franchise dip its toes into slower, more strategic gameplay. The game features the visuals and soundtrack you’ve come to expect from the Metal Slug franchise, paired with crisp turn-based gameplay and mechanics. Despite slowing things down, the game does not lose any of its explosive charm and rewards strategic thinking.
