Blue Prince is a game that mixes aspects of exploration-based gameplay, environmental puzzles, and strategic thinking and throws it all into a roguelike setting. Playing this game is equally as relaxing as it is intellectually stimulating. But as much as you may claim to like puzzles, nothing will prepare you quite like the chess puzzle in the game.

As you pass through the Underground region of the Mt. Holly manor and head past the blue flame elevator, you stumble upon a massive chamber with chess-related decor. At the very center of this chamber, a chessboard lies untouched. Pieces are missing, and the ability to interact with the board indicates that it is a puzzle. What you must do to solve it, the game does not tell you.

Confused by what you saw, you head back into the manor, resuming your exploration and search for Room 46. Along the way on this search, you find a chess piece—one that closely resembles the designs and aesthetics of the puzzle you saw earlier. This is your first clue into what you have to do. You’ve now officially begun the Blue Prince puzzle, and if you’re struggling to complete it, we’re here to help.

The basic idea behind the chess puzzle is that there are missing pieces. As you explore the mansion, you stumble across these pieces and collect them. Each tile on the board corresponds to different rooms, and once you have your pieces, you have to place them on the tile of the room where you found them.

Finding the chess pieces can be tricky due to the randomized nature of the game. To help you, we’ve listed the places where you’re most likely to find them:

  • King – Throne Room, Study
  • Queen – Her Ladyship’s Chamber, Office
  • Rook – Vault, Clock Tower, Conservatory, Nook
  • Knight – Observatory, Security, Treasure Trove
  • Bishop – Bookshop, Attic, Chapel
  • Pawn – Freezer, Solarium, Den, Storeroom, Lost And Found And Walk-In Closet, Secret Passage, Dining Room, Bedroom, Drawing Room.
