Follow our walkthrough to complete the Dark Subject in Borderlands 4 and enter Vile Lictor’s Blacksite to find Lilith.
The thirteenth main mission in Borderlands 4, ‘Dark Subject,’ begins following ‘Crystal Brawl,’ where the Vault Hunters meet Amara, a Siren who was a playable character in Borderlands 3. Begin ‘Dark Subject’ by speaking with Defiant Calder to gain information on Lictor’s hideout.
Lictor is using Eridium to access dangerous energies, and he has abducted Amara’s Siren friend for his twisted experiments. Defiant Calder points you to Lictor’s Blacksite, west of the Order security checkpoint, where he is sure to be hiding any captives.
Borderlands 4: Dark Subject Walkthrough
‘Dark Subject’ is a relatively short main story mission with only a few tough encounters and Amara assisting you throughout. Its recommended level is 17, but you can complete it at a lower level. Finishing the mission rewards you with the following:
- Rare or Epic Pistol
- Tiger of Partali Vault Hunter Style
- Money, XP, and Eridium

Part 1: Enter the Blacksite
Travel southwest to meet Amara at the Blacksite’s perimeter. Follow her inside and clear the creeps. With the Siren backing you up, you should be able to make short work of the creeps and the miniboss, Tim. Use the grappling hook on the Blacksite’s entrance to open up a path inside.
Follow the path inside and fight your way through more of Lictor’s experiments and defeat the Galvanic Badass Creep. Venture deeper into the Blacksite and activate the holotable to learn of Lictor’s plans. He plans to use Lilith’s Siren powers to access the Phase dimension and multiply his power with its resources.

Part 2: Find Lilith
Just as Lictor’s recording ends, the Vile Prototype boss will appear with a purple health bar. Shoot the crystals sticking out of the Vile Prototype’s left leg and shoulder to deplete the purple health bar. If you get downed, shoot the weaker enemies or get close to Amara so she can revive you.
Delve deeper into the Blacksite to reach the Exclave Repository and clear the creeps there. When Amara interacts with the control panel, a Siren falls out of a contained rift and Phasewalks away. Believing her to be Lilith, Amara heads after her. Follow Amara outside to see Lictor’s fortress in the distance and the phase dimension beginning to open within it. ‘Dark Subject’ ends here, and you can continue the main story with ‘His Vile Sanctum.’
