Gearbox has indefinitely delayed Borderlands 4 on the Switch 2, citing development needs. Here’s what you need to know more.

Borderlands 4 was supposed to launch on the Switch 2 just a week later. As of the latest update, Gearbox declared an indefinite delay for the game and canceled and refunded all digital pre-orders. This entire incident has left Switch players heartbroken and wondering what went wrong.
According to Gearbox’s official statement, there is a need for additional development and polishing time. The real story likely lies in the game’s performance issues, which also affect high-end PCs and next-gen consoles.
The Switch 2, in terms of GPU performance, is comparable to that of the Steam Deck and other handheld gaming devices. The game doesn’t run well on these handhelds, pointing towards potential reasons behind Gearbox’s decision to pull the trigger.

Borderlands 4 Troubled Launch

Performance problems have plagued Borderlands 4 on PC and next-gen consoles, including the PS5 Pro and Xbox Series X/S, since its launch. Gamers have reported severe stuttering, crashes, and inconsistent frame rates across the board. Even with high-end rigs, such as RTX 5080 and 5090, the game cannot maintain a reasonable frame rate.
Several media outlets have confirmed these reports, stating that the frame rate gradually worsens after 30 minutes. With powerful hardware struggling to run the game, the chances of getting it to run on the Switch 2 were always slim.
The Official Explanation vs. The Reality

Gearbox states that they want to deliver the best possible experience and hope to align the Switch 2 release better, taking into account cross-platform saves. However, the timing of the delay, around ten days, highly suggests that the port was simply not ready, or the performance was unusable in most cases.
Given the performance issues on more powerful hardware, Gearbox may have hit a wall trying to get the game to run acceptably, even with software aids, on the Switch 2’s Nvidia-powered hardware. They had no choice but to delay the game indefinitely. For now, Switch players will have to wait until Gearbox releases further information.
