Learn how you can complete the Down and Outbound main mission in Borderlands 4, so that you can proceed to the next quest of the game.
The Down and Outbound quest in Borderlands 4 is the third main mission that begins after completing the Recruitment Drive quest. In this mission, you need to collect scanner parts to repair the machine. Once it is ready, scan a Bolt, which you will receive after defeating an enemy.
Although the objectives are linear, completing the mission will take a significant amount of time. Here is a detailed article that contains everything you need to know about the Down and Outbound quest in the game.

Down and Outbound Main Mission in Borderlands 4
Below is the detailed breakdown of the mission:
Collect Your First Vehicle
Interestingly, you can obtain your first vehicle in the game via the Down and Outbound mission. Afterward, you can use it to reach the distant areas in the quest. To do so, head to the Outbounders Headquarters by following the quest marker. Once you arrive there, you will find the enemy forces fighting the Outbounders. Clear them off and jump down the railings to find the entrance to head inside the Outbounders HQ.
Afterward, a cutscene will trigger where you listen to Rush talk, the leader of the Crimson Resistance. He will tell you to meet Conway to collect a thank-you gift for the help. For this, you need to exit the building and find a lady standing nearby. Interact with her to claim your first vehicle in Borderlands 4, the MAV-880 Digirunner bike.
Find Spymaster
For the next objective, you need to reach the Spymaster and recover a total of four contrabands. Although collecting them is optional, it is best that you gather them. Once you arrive at the large building, take the platform on the right, cross the area, and enter through an open gate. Afterward, look for the first Contraband on top of a crate. Next, head outside, turn left, and follow the stairs to find yourself in front of a metal wall. Climb it, walk some distance, turn right, and keep climbing stairs one after another to arrive at the next area where you can find the next Contraband.
Next, exit the area, turn left, follow the path, and find a closed door on the right towards the end. Once you enter, you need to take the stairs consecutively to climb further. After arriving at the open section, take the stairs, and look to the left after completing the second stair set. You will find the third Contraband on top of another crate. Then, continue straight until you find an opening on your left. Jump into it, and you will encounter the boss of this mission, Horace.
Kill the Spymaster and Take the Spymaster’s Bolt
The boss fight will be in two phases, where you can easily tackle him in the first one. During this stage, all you need to do is dodge his attacks and retaliate with your moves. However, defeating Horace in the second phase would be a big challenge, as now you have to deal with the Timekeeper. Keep a close watch on his scythe attacks, including the jumping one.
Once you take down the monster, collect the Spymaster’s bolt from the loot. Now, exit the area, turn left, and continue straight until you spot a platform. Climb over it, and head inside the door on your left. After a short distance, you will find the final Contraband.
Collect the Three Bolt Scanner Parts and Return To Outbounders HQ
For the next objective, you need to hop on your ride and follow the direction of the ECHO Device to arrive at the Wreck of the Nostalgia. Afterward, discover three collectibles from different locations.
The first part is the easiest one to collect, as it is located at the center of the area. For the next part, head straight on your bike and jump over the large gap to enter the wrecked ship. You will find the quest item on top of the computer console. Head outside, and you will need to climb the next rocky structure. Enter inside, and you will encounter a monster. Defeat him and collect the final part from his right.
Install Scanner Parts and Scan Spymaster’s Bolt
Once you have all three scanner parts, use the bike to reach Outbounders HQ. Once there, you will encounter Conway. Interact with the machine to scan Spymaster’s Bolt to learn about him. Also, you will get some information about the Bio-weapon. That will wrap the Down and Outbound mission in Borderlands 4 and begin the ‘A Lot to Process’ mission.
