‘Fault Hunting’ is a side mission in Borderlands 4 that begins with a seismic investigation that leads to an unexpected twist. To access the mission, you must first complete the fourth main mission, ‘A Lot to Process.’ Another starting location for the quest becomes available after the ‘Unpaid Tab’ main mission. Speak with Leopold in Carcadia Burn to take on the quest.

Leopold believes that the increasing frequency of earthquakes in Carcadia has a malicious cause behind it. Panic-stricken, she bids you find their root before it is too late. Head east to the marked cave nearby to investigate the disturbance.

Investigate the Cave

Kill the Creeps inside, and interact with the closed door. Pick up the item lying to its left and search the area to complete the optional objective. Jump up using the stream of air on the right side of the door to reach the ledge above, marked by lights and tumorous growths.

Crouch through the small tunnel to enter the facility. Look through the stuck door and shoot the power cell on the right side of the next room to open it. Continue onwards until you reach the server room, and interact with the monster remains on the low ground to complete the bonus objective.

Direct Power to Server Console

Use the console outlined in green on the upper section near the entrance. Interact with the machine on the opposite end of the room to activate power. Then, redirect power to the server console by using your grappling hook on the ceiling power lines. Rotate the junction points so that there is an unbroken line from the machine to the central console.

After interacting with the console again, defend ECHO-4 while it hacks into the system. You will then meet Genone, a malevolent AI maintaining the Order. Genone has been responsible for the increasing tremors by diverting power. Leave the server room and venture to Lopside, south of Carcadia Burn, for the next objective. You can use the Makeshift Chalet safehouse to fast-travel and get close.

Confront Genone

Defeat the Synths after entering the facility and activate the console by flipping the switch near the red door. Direct power to the door using your grappling hook on the ceiling power lines. Head through the contamination chamber and into the next room to confront Genone.

Genone Boss Fight

  • Genone has a Shield and an Armor health bar. The former is weak to Shock and Radiation while the latter is vulnerable to Corrosive and Cryo.
  • The boss uses short-to-medium range Cryo attacks which you can easily dodge by maintaining your distance and remaining on the move.
  • Synth minions appear during the fight. You can leave a few of them alive in case you get downed and need to kill them quickly for a Second Wind.
  • Shoot at Genone’s head to land critical hits

After defeating Genone, pick up the keycard from the machine he emerged from. Use the keycard on the console in the corner to power down the facility and complete ‘Fault Hunting.’
