Call of Duty: World War 2 has finally returned to the Microsoft Store. For those unaware, earlier this year, back on June 30, 2025, Call of Duty added its 2017 release to the Xbox Game Pass and Microsoft Store. However, just a few days later, on July 5, 2025, the title was suddenly removed. At the time, COD stated only that it was investigating an issue with the game, without sharing further details.

Fortunately, we know now why it was removed from the platform.

Why Was Call of Duty: World War 2 Removed From the Microsoft Store?

Call of Duty: World War 2 was removed from the Microsoft Store for security reasons. When the game launched on the platform, hackers discovered several vulnerabilities in its files. These allowed them to hack into the systems of other players. Essentially, hackers could gain remote access to the PCs of other players. This raised a major red flag behind the scenes.

Although it’s unclear how this happened, reports suggest that it was because the game used a P2P networking feature. Essentially, instead of having a dedicated server for the lobbies, it used one player’s system as the host. Others would simply connect to it as the main server and play. But the hackers found several vulnerabilities in this system that they could exploit.

In some cases, hackers reportedly kicked players from lobbies, banned them, and even shut down their systems remotely. Needless to say, Activision had to take quick action to prevent further damage. Hence, the developer removed the game from the MS Store.

However, this isn’t the first instance of such security issues. Previously, players also reported similar issues with Black Ops 3. Many popular Call of Duty content creators, including Dysmo on YouTube, advised players to avoid the game until developers fixed the security flaws.

That covers just about everything you need to know about why Activision removed Call of Duty: World War 2 from the Microsoft Store. That said, the title is now back in the store after a month in limbo. The developer has seemingly patched the security issues. So, if you own the game on the Microsoft Store or Xbox/PC Game Pass, you can now play it safely without worrying about hacks.
