Learn about how well Europa Universalis 5 supports modding and which major EU5 overhaul mods you can look forward to seeing soon.

The Europa Universalis franchise has garnered a passionate community of modders who develop everything from fresh overlays to comprehensive overhaul mods with entirely new nations, combat mechanics, and events. EU4 has arguably received the best modding treatment of any of the grand strategy games so far, with dozens of top-tier complete overhaul mods for players to immerse themselves in.
While developing Europa Universalis 5, the team at Paradox Tinto took special care to create a modding-friendly framework for the game. They took modding support a step further and provided prominent modders with early access to EU5. As a result, you can install mods in Europa Universalis 5 as soon as they are uploaded by modders.

Europa Universalis 5: Which Mods are Available

While no overhaul mods for Europa Universalis 5 are available on release, well-known modders were given pre-release access to the grand strategy game. As a result, massive game-changing mods will be available much sooner than they would have otherwise been. Some of the most anticipated mods with early-access support already in the pipeline include:
- Voltaire’s Nightmare 2
- Imperium Universalis
- Extended Timeline (2-9999)
- Europa Expanded
Notably, the team behind Anbennar did not get pre-release access to EU5 for legal reasons as the mod developers have “Ambitions of their own” which did not permit them full early access. However, with the game release, the EU5 Anbennar mod’s development is undoubtedly underway.

How Good is Modding Support in Europa Universalis 5?

Although EU5 isn’t particularly easy to mod, the developers did make an effort to introduce mod-friendliness in many of the game’s systems while creating them. Situations and International Organizations are examples mentioned in Paradox Tinto’s Dev Diary as being particularly moddable.
Modding in Europa Universalis 5 is reportedly similar to other Paradox grand strategy games like Crusader Kings 3, Imperator: Rome, and Victoria 3. What these games and EU5 have in common is that they operate on the Jomini Framework. This framework allows EU5 to continue the legacy of modding conveniences present in the older games with a datacontext-based GUI and a comprehensive scripting system.
Paradox has taken further steps to support modders of any caliber to get used to the game’s code and Jomini Framework. They have created multiple posts on Paradox Forums describing how to get started with mod creation. They have even collaborated with mod author Stiopa866 for a Dev Diary post to give a comprehensive breakdown of how modding works in EU5.
