Digimon Story Time Stranger is a nearly perfect game to play on the Steam Deck, with smooth gameplay sections pushing 60 FPS regularly and robust support for the handheld’s hardware. Released eight years after the previous title, Digimon Story Cyber Sleuth, the 2025 game is particularly well-suited for handhelds with turn-based combat, a satisfying evolution system, and mechanics that let you level up Digimon in the background.

The Steam Deck’s 16:10 display is well supported, meaning there are no black borders at the top or bottom of the screen. The game even features suspend/resume support through Steam Cloud. With a few tweaks to Digimon Story Time Stranger’s visuals and controller settings, Valve’s handheld can deliver a seamless experience throughout the game.

Using the following settings, you will maintain 50-60 FPS in dungeons and during battles.

  • Display Mode: Borderless
  • Resolution: 1280 x 800 (16:10)
  • Frame Rate: 60
  • Image Quality: Custom
  • VSync: Off
  • FXAA: On
  • MSAA: 0x
  • TAA: On
  • Depth of Field: Off
  • Bloom: Off
  • Volumetric Fog: On
  • Screen Space Reflection: On
  • Ambient Occlusion: On
  • Texture Quality: High
  • Texture Filtering: Anisotropic (16x)
  • Character Density: Medium

You can quickly achieve optimal settings for the game by choosing the Medium Preset and switching Texture Quality to High. While these settings can push 60 FPS, the frame rate may drop below 40 FPS in open-world sections of urban areas and the Digimon world.

One of the worst offenders is Central Town Downtown. The area is visually demanding with crowds of NPCs, causing frame rate drops into the 30-40 FPS range. To improve performance, reduce Character Density to Low and lock the frame rate at 40 FPS for a more stable experience.

These settings result in a 12-16W power draw, which translates to around three and a half hours of battery life on the OLED model and two and a half on the LCD.

Digimon Story Time Stranger has stellar controller support, and the game recommends playing with a controller, making the Steam Deck a perfect fit. However, you can improve upon the default control scheme by mapping the left and right stick clicks to the back buttons for more intuitive inputs.
