Josef Fares is a well-known and beloved name in the cooperative gaming space. He is the creator of A Way Out and It Takes Two. Both of these games are household names in the gaming community. So it is only natural that his next title, Split Fiction, is arguably the most anticipated co-op game of 2025. Hazelight Studios first unveiled the game at the Game Awards 2024.

Similar to its predecessors, players will be able to share the experience with a friend. However, many players might not have a gaming buddy, yet they still might want to try the game out. So, is there a possibility of playing Split Fiction Solo? The short answer is no, but let’s take a deep dive into the matter.

Players Cannot Play Split Fiction Solo

Before we take a look at everything surrounding a potential solo mode, first, we must understand how Split Fiction works. The game follows the same formula we saw in the Game of the Year winner title, It Takes Two.

Players will be playing as two protagonists in the game, but there is a twist this time. The two lead characters are authors stuck in the worlds of their own fictional works, which makes it a unique experience with a lot of potential. Additionally, the setting of the title sets it apart from previous entries because the game takes place in two completely different worlds, one inspired by fantasy and the other by sci-fi.

Now, let’s discuss if it is possible to play Split Fiction without a friend. The short and easy answer is no, players cannot play Split Fiction Solo; it is a purely cooperative game that requires a companion for you to enjoy it. It is unfortunate, but this is how Josef Fares envisioned the game and intended it to be played. The game wants you to enjoy and share the experience of all of the high points, twists, and gut-wrenching moments with a real human being and not some AI.

We saw a similar approach to A Way Out and It Takes Two, and many would consider that the cooperative gameplay is the essence of Hazelight Studios’s titles.

Will Hazelight Introduce a Split Fiction Solo Mode in the Future?

We cannot rule out the possibility of Split Fiction getting a solo mode in future updates. However, if we take a look at Hazelight’s approach with their previous games, then we must admit that the chances of the developers adding a solo mode in the latest title are close to none.

But all is not lost because in the past, Josef Fares has talked about potentially deviating a little from the co-op structures of their games in the future. To be more specific, in an interview, Fares has stated:

“We will not only do co-op, we will definitely do other stuff with a Haze-like twist. We want to do something different like a twist… like what we did with the co-op. But co-op is great and, I mean, you can tell great stories and there’s so much to be explored there.”

Lastly, it seems like players won’t be getting a solo mode in Split Fiction anytime soon, but still, it is hard to say what the future announcements and updates hold. We don’t know in which direction Josef Fares will go next. However, Split Fiction is shaping up to be a promising new addition to Hazelight Studios’ catalogue, and many gamers are quite eager to share it with their friends.
