The Codex (or Codices) is a resource required to complete the Antiquity Age Science Legacy Path. Progressing through the Legacy Paths rewards the Golden Age bonus and puts you in a stronger position for the subsequent ages.
In the Antiquity Age Science Legacy Path, your main goal is to display 10 Codices. Knowing how to acquire these resources is essential for progressing in this strategy game. We will explain the various ways you can obtain Codices and how to use them in Civilization 7.

How To Get Codex in Civilization 7
There are several ways to obtain Codex (or Codices) in Civilization 7, though some methods are more reliable than others. Let’s explore all possible ways to acquire them.
Researching Civic and Technology Trees is the primary and most efficient way to obtain Codex in Civilization 7. Researching certain activities in the Civic Tree and reaching the Mastery level for specific technologies in the Technology Tree rewards you with Codices. You can hover over the various projects in the research section to find out which one offers Codex as a reward. The Technology Tree provides more Codices than the Civics Tree.
Other actions like completing wonders like Nalanda or becoming Suzerin of City-States can reward Codices. You can also earn some Codices from several random Narrative Choices. During narrative choices, choose the options with the Codex pop-up to earn these resources.

How To Use Codex in Civilization 7
Upon collection, display 10 Codices to complete the Antiquity Age Science Legacy Path. However, you need to have buildings with slots available for Codex to display them. While your Palace has one slot, you can have additional slots by building structures like Libraries (Writing Technology) and Academies (Mathematics Technology). You can also check how many Codex slots a building has before construction. While Libraries offer two Codex slots, Academies come with three slots.
To display a Codex in Civilization 7:
- Click on the View Great Works option, appears like a white vase on the top of your main screen.
- This brings up the menu, which shows your available Codices and the buildings with the available slots.
- Click on the slot to fill it with the codex.
Note that if a building is destroyed, the Codex will be unequipped from them. So, you need to re-assign the Codex for display after repairing the structure. Codices will boost your overall Science yield while on display.
