Master Your Parries

Despite being a turn-based RPG, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 incorporates a real-time parry system similar to other action games. To parry, you have to press the button just before the attack lands. The timing may feel off, but practice this to nail it. Successful parries give you the chance to counterattack and absolutely decimate your enemies. Should you feel it’s too difficult against certain enemies, feel free to rely on the dodge as well. The dodge has a much more forgiving window.

Explore Everything

While the nature of the story may urge you to rush through it, we recommend slowing down and seeing everything the game has to offer. As you go about exploring each area, you will stumble across journals that flesh out the world. You may also encounter optional bosses, all of which drop special weapons and accessories when beaten. We recommend backtracking, too, as you can explore more through newly unlocked abilities, Metroidvania-style.

Change Party Members Often

There are two main reasons for this, with the first simply being that switching up your party gives you an idea of what each character plays like. This will help you strategize better, rather than forcing you to be stuck to a singular playstyle. You may discover a composition that might work best against certain enemies this way. The second reason has to do with the leveling system in the game. Only the active party members gain XP and level up. This means leaving one character on the bench for too long can hurt you in the long run.

Exploit Enemy Weaknesses

As is the case with any RPG, all enemies you face in Clair Obscur Expedition 33 come with weaknesses to exploit. The weaknesses ensure that the fight is fair and you always have a way out. Hitting the weak spots deals a ton of damage, making the fights easier. The Chromatic Lancelier, for instance, has a glowing orb on its head that you can shoot. The enemy is also weak to ice, so that’s an elemental weakness you can exploit.

Invest in the Shield-Breaking Skills

After about an hour or two into your playthrough, you will come across enemies that use shields. These are magical shields that tank your attacks and prolong the fights unnecessarily. We recommend investing in shield-breaking skills to destroy the shields with ease. Maelle, for instance, has an ability called Breaking Rules, which removes shields entirely. Keeping these skills in your arsenal will make the combat feel much better paced and stop you from wasting your AP.
