The Crushing Cavern is one of the game’s most unique dungeons. It contains the journal of an expedition and a gimmick boss fight. The Cavern also takes inspiration from the classic Dark Souls trickery, using the darkness and the environment. Here’s a walkthrough of the Crushing Cavern in Clair Obscur Expedition 33 that you need to beat.

The Crushing Cavern is located north of the Yellow Harvest. This area is only accessible by water with the help of Esquie. Once Act 2 begins, you will obtain the ability to swim with Esquie. This opens up a lot of side content that you can complete before completing the main quests. The Crushing Cavern is completely optional, and is a gimmick boss fight that needs some setup before you go inside.

Inside the cavern, just keep on walking straight, and you will see a purple item on the ground. Move towards it. Then, you will fall into a pit that is very reminiscent of the Dark Souls series. The boss of the cavern, the Giant Sapling, is a boss that has only two moves. An attack that will inflict exhaust (no AP gain/AP set to 1) and a buff that will create 3 shields.

You might think that this will be an easy fight, but there is another hazard. The walls are closing in. You are running out of turns and have around 6-7 turns before you get crushed and end your expedition immediately. You can equip Maelle’s shield breaker to counter the boss. If your damage is enough, you can also just dodge the attacks, as it is easier.

If you damage is not enough, make sure to parry the exhaust attacks as they will help you deal more damage and potentially break the boss. The Giant Sapling is generally not tanky, and only its abilities make it more tedious than intended. The exhaust attack also hits all your party members each turn, so make sure to remember the timing or dodge.

Make sure to use all your max damage spells, and if unlocked, Sciel’s Intervention spell. This spell gives a party member an immediate turn, as well as a considerable amount of AP. This costs 5 AP, but is well worth it as your damage dealer can deal the most amount of damage in a turn.

Breaking the boss will not make the walls come closer, so equipping pictos with more break damage is advised. Equipping more defensive pictos can also work, as it takes the stress out of dodging every exhaust attack.

Rewards of Crushing Cavern

A colour of Lumina and the Expedition 45 journal await you. The journal has a record of a similar experience that your party faces. They are ambushed by the Giant Sapling Nevron and are crushed there. This is pretty much it for the Crushing Cavern in Clair Obscur Expedition 33, as it is a fun challenge to deal as much damage as possible while dodging AP de-buff spells.
