On your final step of the journey to find Monoco, you reach his station in Clair Obscur Expedition 33. But an obstacle soon arrives behind you. The Stalact is a unique boss that has the properties of both fire and ice. While it may not be one of the hardest bosses in the game, the Stalact serves as a tutorial for gradient attacks in the game, another mechanic that you have to quickly get used to as the game scales and becomes harder.

The Stalact is a boss with the ability to change its elements to fire or ice. The stances are changed during the Stalact’s turn, so it is always better to have both fire and ice spells to deal maximum damage. During Act 2: Verso, the Stalact is a boss that invades Monoco’s station after you converse with the Gestral, who has a strange sense of humor.

The best counter for the Stalact is Lune, an elemental spell mage who helps you deal mostly elemental damage. During this Act, you should have at least two fire and ice spells, depending on your build. Lune deals quick burn and freezing effects, so she becomes very powerful in this boss fight. Additionally, Monoco also mentions to Verso what he hasn’t taught your expedition: Gradient Attacks.

Gradient Attacks are stronger attacks that charge up depending on the AP you use in battle. With a total of three charges, each character in your party will have a unique Gradient Attack that you can use during their turn. These attacks deal massive damage and break to enemies. During this battle, the key to winning is the Gradient Attacks. However, later on, you will unlock support-type Gradient Attacks as well. They buff your party or heal them significantly and are available for support characters. But in this game, who becomes the support is mainly up to you (Lune).

The Stalact’s attacks are not very hard to dodge, and you can complete the fight without hitting any parries. As it is still a tutorial boss, the chances of you losing this fight are low, but never zero. Always be ready for the jump attacks that the Stalact hits you with, as they deal heavy damage to your entire party. Other than that, the Stalact hits you with a combo. The pointer for the dodge and parry timing is to look at his snout. Time slows down while the snout is more prominently focused—that is the perfect time window to parry.
