In this guide, we shall go over how to destroy the Paint Spikes in Clair Obscur Expedition 33 so you can uncover all secrets.

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is packed with secrets waiting to be uncovered—whether it’s journals chronicling past expeditions, hidden NPCs ready to dump lore, or concealed paths holding valuable rewards. The game embraces a metroidvania-style design, often locking away these discoveries behind blocked routes and special abilities.
One of the most common metroidvania-esque obstacles you will encounter in this game is the Paint Spikes. These large rocks with a shiny blue base frequently block your path, teasing you with the promise of rewards and secrets just out of reach. If you get tempted and try to break them, they won’t budge. This might make you want to give up, but there is a way to destroy them.
To do so, you will need to track down the Lost Gestral NPCs scattered across the world. Once found, these NPCs must be returned to Sastro, which in turn helps you unlock the Paint Break ability—your key to shattering the Paint Spikes.
If you are looking to break the Paint Spikes but don’t know how, you have come to the right place. In this guide, we shall go over how to destroy the Paint Spikes in Clair Obscur: Expedition 33.

As stated earlier, you break the rocks by unlocking the Paint Break ability. You unlock this ability by finding four Lost Gestral NPCs and then returning to Sastro. Below, we’ve listed the locations of four Lost Gestrals that you can find fairly easily:
- Lost Gestral #1: You will find the first Lost Gestral NPC shortly after completing the Flying Waters area. The NPC is on the main path leading to Esquie’s Nest.
- Lost Gestral #2: Take the right turn just before the entrance to the Stone Wave Cliffs. The Lost Gestral is at the end of the path.
- Lost Gestral #3: Swim to the island located west of Gestral Village, the one with the White Tree portal. Walk past the portal, and you will find the Lost Gestral at the far end of the island.
- Lost Gestral #4: On the path from the Forgotten Battlefield to Monoco’s Station, look for a green tree in the middle of a field of white trees. The Lost Gestral is near this tree.
Find the four Lost Gestrals and return to Sastro to unlock the Paint Break ability. You can then use a normal attack on the blue roots to destroy the Paint Spikes.
