If you’ve just started playing Cloverpit, the phone will not work right away. You could try interacting with it, but you can’t use it to call anybody. However, this does not mean nobody can call you. The phone is used by a certain NPC to contact you over the course of your run. He calls you at routine intervals, but you first have to activate this NPC and get the phone working by beating a deadline

To beat your first deadline, you need to deposit the first debt. Play through the game and use the slot machine till you have 75 Coins to pay. Once you have the amount, deposit it, and the debt collector will set another deadline for you. Your phone will ring when the second deadline activates, and the NPC will talk to you.

Pick up the ringing phone, and the NPC will offer you supplements for your run. These supplements are basically the power-ups you get in other roguelike games and are crucial in making a build. The phone NPC calls and offers you 3 power-ups to pick from at the end of each round. So pick those that synergize with your playstyle. If you’re unsatisfied with the perks on offer, you can use Tickets to reroll and attain different power-ups.
